New Delhi: President Ramnath Kovind on Monday cleared the appointment of former Supreme Court judge Pinaki Chandra Ghose as the country's first Lokpal.
The President has also appointed judicial and non-judicial members of the Lokpal.
The list of judicial members includes names like Justices Dilip B Bhosale, Pradip Kumar Mohanty, Abhilasha Kumari and Ajay Kumar Tripathi. Whereas, non-judicial members' list includes Dinesh Kumar Jain, Archana Ramasundaram, Mahender Singh and Dr Indrajeet Prasad Gautam.
According to the press release by the Rashtrapati Bhawan, the appointments will come into effect from the dates the members would assume charge of the respective offices.
In 2013, The Lokpal and Lokayuktas Act was passed by the parliament to make way for establishing a Lokpal to keep corruption in check in public offices, including the PMO.
These appointments have come after the Supreme Court's intervention while hearing a PIL filed by NGO Common Cause. The Apex court on January 17th, 2019 had slammed the government for delaying the appointment of the Lokpal.
