New Delhi: A day before the Supreme court is scheduled to pronounce its judgement on the quantum of sentence for Prashant Bhushan, who was convicted for contempt of court, law students have written to the Chief Justice of India and Justice Arun Mishra seeking a reconsideration of the judgement.
The students wrote that the top court had apologised during the emergency for failing and had endured the criticism and this time it "has been shaken merely by two tweets of Advocate Prashant Bhushan".
Adding on further the students contend that judiciary ought to reply for criticism by the restoration of public confidence and not to charge for contempt when a person who criticises out of "love for justice".

"Those 2 tweets do not hurt the sanctity of the court as it all depends on the approach of the judges towards justice. We have seen judges accepting whatever the executive states and moving forward with laid back attitude in serious and sensitive cases. This is what can shake the public confidence and the only reason you and your brother judges should worry about," read the letter.
Justice Arun Mishra led bench had held Advocate Prashant Bhushan guilty for contempt of court for his two tweets against the sitting CJI and his 4 predecessors. The court had asked Bhushan to apologise so that they can let the matter settle but Bhushan had refused after which it was decided that he will be sentenced.
The court will give its verdict on the matter tomorrow.
