PM Modi congratulates scientists on criticality of Kakrapar Atomic Plant

  • Congratulations to our nuclear scientists for achieving criticality of Kakrapar Atomic Power Plant-3! This indigenously designed 700 MWe KAPP-3 reactor is a shining example of Make in India. And a trailblazer for many such future achievements!

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday congratulated nuclear scientists as the Kakrapar atomic power plant-3 achieved criticality, saying the indigenous reactor is a shining example of the 'Make in India' campaign.

The 700 MW power plant in Gujarat achieved criticality, meaning it reached the normal operating condition of areactor. It indicates that the plant is now set to generate power.

"Congratulations to our nuclear scientists for achieving criticality of Kakrapar Atomic Power Plant-3. This indigenously designed 700 MWe KAPP-3 reactor is a shining example of Make in India," the prime minister tweeted.

He said it is a "trailblazer for many such future achievements."

The Kakrapar Atomic Power Station in Gujarat originally consisted of two 220 MW pressurised water reactor with heavy water as moderator (PHWR). The construction of units 3 and 4, both of 700 MW, started in November 2010.

While KAPS-2 attained criticality after a shutdown in 2016, the renovation and modernisation of KAPS-2 was completed in 2018 after a similar issue. The plant is now operating at full capacity.
