Patenting of Innovative Low Cost PPE developed by Indian Navy Paves way for Rapid Mass Production

A doctor of Indian Navy working at Innovation Cell at Institute of Naval Medicine (INM) has developed low cost, affordable PPE. Efforts are towards mass production of the PPEs, as per Ministry of Defence.

Delhi; As per Ministry of Defence, in a major step towards rapid mass production of the Medical Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) developed by the Indian Navy, a patent has been successfully filed by the Intellectual Property Facilitation Cell (IPFC) of Min of Defence, in association with National Research Development Corporation (NRDC), an enterprise under Min of Science & Technology, also tweeted.

One of the Doctors of Indian Navy working at recently created Innovation Cell at Institute of Naval Medicine (INM), Mumbai has developed this low cost PPE and a batch has already been produced at Naval Dockyard Mumbai.

What is the difference between this PPE developed by the Navy and other PPEs. The one developed by Navy is made of such a fabric which not only affords high level of protection but also provides high ‘breathability’ as against other PPEs available in the market. As a result, one can use this low cost PPE even in hot and humid weather of India. This has been further tested and validated by ICMR approved Testing Lab.

In order to start with mass production of this low cost PPE developed by the Navy, efforts are underway by a core team of Navy, IPFC and NRDC. The efforts are mainly focusing on identifying eligible firms which can undertake licensed production of the PPEs on a fast track and without much capital investment. These low cost and comfortable PPES are much needed by our front line health professionals to strengthen the fight against CVOID-19/Coronavirus.

The team of Innovators from Navy is working in close coordination with IPFC which was set up under Mission Raksha Gyan Shakti. Since its launch in Nov 2018, around 1500 IP assets have been created under Mission Raksha Gyan Shakti.
