New Delhi: Against the backdrop of unabated incidents of violence against women and children in Uttar Pradesh, a Parliamentary committee on Home Affairs on Wednesday questioned the state police over the issue.

The 31-member Parliamentary Committee on Home Affairs headed by Congress leader Anand Sharma heard the views of the representatives of the state government of Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh on the subject of crimes against women and children.

Representatives of the UP police told to the committee members that the number of cases of crime against women has reduced in the state.

However, a few members raised various issues concerning safety and security of women and children in the state.

The members believed to have raised Hathras incident where a Dalit girl was allegedly gangraped before her death.

This was the 5th such meeting over the issue of atrocities and crimes against women children.

It was learnt that a BJP member pointed out in the meeting that the number of cases of crimes against women and children may have been reduced because police are reluctant to register complaints.

"Even in the Hathras case police were hesitant to file an FIR and initiate the investigation," said a member.

The committee members said that the UP police have not registered a single zero FIR under which a case can be registered at any police station irrespective of the place of occurrence of the incident.

The committee members also took a note from the representatives from Rajasthan police over the law and order situation in the state especially in connection with the safety and security of women and children.
