Pained by tragic demise of Sikh pilgrims in Pakistan: PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and SAD President Sukhbir Singh Badal have expressed their grief over the death of 29 Sikh pilgrims after the train they were travelling in rammed into a mini bus. Badal has also requested the Pak PM Imran Khan to o take stock of unmanned railway level-crossings to avoid accidents.

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was pained by the tragic demise of Sikh pilgrims in a road accident in Pakistan on Friday.

"Pained by the tragic demise of Sikh pilgrims in Pakistan. My thoughts are with their families and friends in this hour of grief," the prime minister tweeted.

"I pray that those pilgrims injured recover at the earliest," he said.

At least 19 people, mostly Pakistani Sikhs, were killed when a mini-bus collided with a train in Sheikhupura district in Pakistan's Punjab province on Friday. The Sikh pilgrims were returning from Nankana Sahib in Punjab and the train hit the Shah Hussain Express which was coming from Karachi to Lahore at Farooqababd railway station.

The railways said a divisional engineer has been suspended from service and an inquiry has been launched.

Meanwhile, Sukhbir Singh Badal, President, Shiromani Akali Dal(SAD) also expressed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family members of the deceased Sikh pilgrims in Pakistan. He also appealed to the Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan to take stock of unmanned railway level-crossings to avoid accidents.

Taking it to Twitter, he said, "Deeply saddened to know of a tragedy that befell a Pakistani Sikh family that was on their way to pilgrimage.19 members of the family, as learnt, lost lives when their van rammed into a train at a crossing."

"May Gurusahab grant peace to the departed souls & strength to their kin," his tweet read.
