CPI-M condemns Army Chief's statement on protests against CAA

The Communist Party of India--Marxist (CPI-M) has condemned the statement of Army Chief General Bipin Rawat on the protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

Rawat on Thursday said that leaders are not those who spearhead the people in "inappropriate directions" and stressed that leading masses and crowds to carry out arson and violence in cities and towns is not leadership.

"The General has directly indulged in condemning the student protestors, who have been opposing the Citizenship Amendment Act and the move towards creating the National Register for Citizens across the country," said the CPI-M in a statement.

"The Army Chief's statement underlines as to how the situation has degenerated under the Modi government where the highest officer in uniform can so brazenly breach the limits of his institutional role," added the politbureau of CPI-M.

"It is, therefore, necessary to raise the question as to whether we are going the Pakistan way of politicising the military. Such obnoxious interference in matters of democratic struggles from top-ranking military professionals is unheard of in the history of independent India," added the statement.

"Leaders are not those who lead the people in an inappropriate direction. As we are witnessing a large number of universities and colleges, students, the way they are leading masses and crowds to carry out arson and violence in cities and towns, this is not leadership," the Army chief had said.

"Leadership is all about leading. Therefore, what is so complex about leadership if it is all about leading because when you move forward, everybody follows. It is not that simple," he had said.

Several parts of the country have witnessed a spate of protests over the CAA, many of which have turned violent. A lot of these demonstrations have taken place in several colleges and universities across the country.

Indian Army chiefs do not comment on politics: Yogendra Yadav

Swaraj India chief Yogendra Yadav said, "Army chief has decided to comment on politics which is a sharp departure from the convention of last 70 years. In India, Army chief do not comment on political issues."

He took sharp jibe at the Prime Minister saying that army chief's comment where he says that a leader upholds the responsibility of leading its people in the right direction is specifically mentioned for him.

General Rawat, who is due to retire on December 31 spoke for the first time against the Citizenship Act. He said, "Leadership is all about leading. When you forward, everybody follows. But leaders are those who lead people in right direction. Leaders are not those who lead people in inappropriate direction."

Opposition condemn Army chief's leadership remark in the wake of Anti-CAA protest

New Delhi: Leaders across the political spectrum on Thursday condemned Army Chief General Bipin Rawat's remarks on the leadership.

Alluding to the protests across the country over citizenship law, the Army chief had earlier today said that leading masses and crowds to carry out arson and violence in cities and towns is not leadership. "Leaders are not those who lead people in an inappropriate direction," he said.

Taking a dig at him for his remarks, All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi said, "Leadership is knowing the limits of one's office. It is about understanding the idea of civilian supremacy and preserving the integrity of the institution that you head."

Congress leader Digvijaya Singh also expressed similar sentiments.

"I agree [with] General Saheb but also leaders are not those who allow their followers to indulge in the genocide of communal violence. Do you agree with me General Saheb?" he questioned.

Several parts of the country witnessed a spate of protests over the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), many of which turned violent.

Incidentally, a lot of these demonstrations have taken place in several colleges and universities across the country.
