Reacting over his return to Delhi from Srinagar without meeting locals, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said that some days ago he was invited by Governor to visit Jammu and Kashmir and he accepted the invitation. 

He added that the delegation wanted to get a sense of what people were going through, but it was not allowed beyond the airport. 

"Press people with us were mishandled, beaten. It's clear that the situation in J&K isn't normal," Rahul added.

Ghulam Nabi Azad questions the claims of normalcy in Jammu and Kashmir

Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad questioned the claims of normalcy in Jammu and Kashmir, saying that if it was so why several political leaders in the state are under house arrest.

Terming it a contradiction of government's stand, he further added, "It has been around 20 days. On one hand, the government says everything is normal and on the other hand, it doesn't allow anyone to go there. I have never seen such a contradiction."

Ghulam Nabi Azad is a part of the Opposition delegation visiting scheduled to visit Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir later in the day in order to see the ground reality, days after the Centre abrogated Article 370 from the region.

"The political parties which are going under the leadership of Rahul Gandhi are responsible political outfits and all of us are responsible leaders. We are not going to break the law. The issue of J-K, Ladakh is worrisome," he said while expressing concern about no statement being issued by the Home Ministry on the situation.

A delegation of nine opposition parties set to visit Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday

Srinagar: As a delegation of opposition parties led by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, is set to visit Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday in the wake of modification of Article 370, the administration requested them against visiting the state, saying attempts should not be made to disturb the gradual restoration of normal life.

A delegation of nine opposition parties led by Gandhi will visit Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday to meet the people and party leaders in the region where restrictions have been imposed since the abrogation of Article 370.

Saturday's visit to Srinagar will be Gandhi's first visit since the modification of Article 370 and bifurcation of the state into Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
