The celebrity candidates from offbeat backgrounds failed to impress in the assembly elections held at Maharashtra and Haryana. While most of the candidates lost, the BJP fielded former Indian Hockey captain Sandeep Singh, from Pehowa, did not disappoint as he secured a win over Congress candidate Mandeep Chattha.

Hyderabad: With the counting of votes done and dusted for the Assembly elections in Maharashtra and Haryana, here is a look at how the celebrity candidates from offbeat backgrounds performed.

TikTok sensation Sonali Phogat, who was contesting from Haryana's Adampur Constituency on a BJP ticket, lost to senior Congress leader Kuldeep Bishnoi, who is a three-time legislator from the constituency.

Olympic gold medallist Yogeshwar Dutt, who was the BJP candidate from Haryana's Baroda, lost to Congress candidate Sri Krishan Hooda, who is a two-time sitting MLA from the constituency.

Marathi 'Bigg Boss' participant Abhijeet Bichukale lost to Shiv Sena youth leader Aaditya Thackeray from Mumbai's Worli seat.

Marathi actress Deepali Sayyad, who contested from the Mumbra-Kalwa seat on a Shiv Sena ticket, lost to NCP's Jitendra Ahwad, a close aide of NCP chief Sharad Pawar.

The BJP fielded former Indian Hockey captain Sandeep Singh, from Pehowa, which the party had never won. And the hockey superstar did not disappoint as he secured a win over Congress candidate Mandeep Chattha.

The BJP also fielded Commonwealth gold medalist Babita Phogat from Dadri. However, the wrestler tasted defeat at the hands of independent candidate Sombir.

In Mumbai's Byculla seat, 'Bigg Boss' fame actor Ajaz Khan and Geeta Gawli, daughter of jailed underworld don Arun Gawli lost to Yamini Yashwant Jadhav of the Shiv Sena. While Khan contested as an independent candidate, Gawli contested for the Akhil Bharatiya Sena and was supported by Prakash Ambedkar's VBA.
