New Delhi/Assam: Malik Motasim Khan, Jamaat-e Islami India Secretary for National Affairs condemned the segregation of people into citizens and "foreigners" through the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and called the entire exercise an "unsuccessful" one.

"It's very sad that something like NRC has been implemented in our country. It has been a very unsuccessful exercise conducted by the government. This has led to a lot of problems for the residents of the state. This not just brings bad repute for the state of Assam but for the country altogether. It is a matter of shame that nearly 20 lakh people who have been residing in the country since independence are deprived of citizenship."

"The issue was always a political one kept alive over the years by both the Congress and BJP governments for the sake of votebank and divisive politics. This is an unsuccessful exercise and a burden on the general public."

No person should be deprived of human rights, says Sanjoy Hazarika after NRC publication

New Delhi/Assam: Renowned author and Director of Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative (CHRI) Sanjoy Hazarika on Saturday said that nobody in India can be deprived of their human rights be it citizens or non-citizens.

"Human rights is for everybody in India. It's part of universal declaration of human rights and India is one of the signatory," said Hazarika to ETV Bharat.

He spoke to ETV Bharat hours after the final list of National Register of Citizen (NRC) was published in Assam. The list excluded names of more than 19 lakh people in the state.

"According to Article 21 of the Constitution, no one in India can be deprived of life and liberty," said Hazarika adding "Migration is a problem worldwide and thus can't be handled in an arbitrary way."

Hazarika who has authored several books especially on Northeast said that NRC publication will not affect the bilateral ties between India and Bangladesh.

"This (NRC) will not have any impact on the bilateral and diplomatic relation with Bangladesh," said Hazarika.

"They (Bangladesh) will never accept of a large scale influx from their territory. We don't have deportation policy with Bangladesh too...What we can do is that we should push the intruders from the border itself," said Hazarika.

The author said that publication of NRC is a step forward in implementing various clauses of the 1985 Assam Accord.

"Many were expecting an error-free NRC but it's difficult to achieve the feat in a complex place like Assam," said Hazarika.

Elaborating on the likely impact of NRC on the neighbouring states of Assa, Hazarika said, "Impact is already there. States are preparing their own list."

Hazarika said that there is Article 371 (A) for the protection of indeginious people in Nagaland and asked if there will be a similar law for other states.

Not convinced with final NRC: BJP MLA Shiladitya Deb

The ruling Bharatiya Janta Party's MLA from Hojai constituency of Assam Shiladitya Deb on Saturday said that he was not "convinced" with the final National Register of Citizens (NRC) list and claimed that the entire exercise was marred by corruption.

"I am not convinced with the NRC because the way the list has been updated so far is highly doubtful. When the Assam Andolan took place, the leaders claimed that as many as 80 lakh Bangladeshi immigrants had entered Assam, and we anticipated that more than one crore Bangladeshi Muslims would be excluded from the final NRC. But, today through this NRC, these people have become the citizens of the country."

"I also believe that the entire exercise was marred by corruption."

"When the NRC would no longer be monitored by the Supreme Court, and the list is back under the control of the state government, I hope there is an investigation into the entire exercise."

A total of 3,11,21,004 names were included out of 3,30,27,661 applicants.
