New Delhi: Defending Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar for his comments on Congress President Sonia Gandhi, the BJP on Monday said he did not say anything wrong and he was just using the language understood by common people.
"There's nothing wrong in it. He did not say anything that could be made an issue," BJP national spokesperson Tom Vadakkan told ETV Bharat here.
"There is nothing wrong with his statement," he said, adding that Congress was just making an issue out it.
Haryana Congress president Kumari Selja wants to create a "sympathy wave" out of it, the BJP leader said.
"She (Kumari Selja) can't win the upcoming election for Congress in the state. She is just trying to create a sympathy wave out it," he alleged, saying "had they done something for the people of Haryana, it would have been good for the Congress".
Earlier in the day, the Congress sought an unconditional apology from Haryana Chief Minister for his "unparliamentary" comments on Sonia Gandhi.
"His (Khattar) remarks against the Congress President are deplorable and unparliamentary, it is a clear reflection of his and the BJP's disrespectful attitude towards women," Congress women's wing chief Sushmita Dev said in a statement.
"The BJP is lowering the level of public discourse. Lowering the discourse is an attempt to divert attention from the real issues that are being evaded like joblessness and acute economic slowdown," the Congress leader said.
During an assembly election rally on Sunday, the Haryana Chief Minister had targeted Sonia Gandhi over her return as the Congress President, almost comparing her with a dead rat while using the Hindi proverb "khoda pahad nikli chuhiya".
