New Delhi: Amid COVID-19 outbreak in India the migrant labourers are on roads and walking thousands of kilometres to reach home. National Human Rights Commission ( NHRC) on Friday sought a report in two weeks from Union Home Ministry on steps taken or proposed on issues related to stranded migrant labourers.
NHRC also called for details on special trains, uniform action plan including health check-up, transportation, temporary accommodation of migrants returning their home states.
NHRC had earlier issued notice to Maharashtra government over mowing down of 16 migrants in Aurangabad. A notice to Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh governments were also issued after media reports of on-road delivery of migrant woman, who was walking from Nashik to Satna.
As per records, the cases of Coronavirus among migrants is increasing and it is the next challenge for states, especially Bihar and Odisha to check the number of cases.
As per govt records from May 4 to May 13, a total of 4275 samples were collected from migrants who returned to Bihar boarding Sharmik special trains and among them, 320 were found positive.
The number of cases in Odisha especially in hotspot Ganjam district also increased by 249 in 10 days.
The Union government has announced on Thursday to provide free foodgrains to migrant workers for the next two months which will amount to 3500 crore.
Approximately 8 crore migrants who are not covered under the Food Distribution System will be provided with 5 kgs of grain per person and 1 kg Chana per family for one month.
