NITI Aayog member Dr. V K Saraswat has claimed that revamping higher education sector in India will create more employment opportunities. He also highlighted the fact that primary education is getting all the focus from policymakers.

New Delhi: Dr. V K Saraswat, member of government's premier think-tank NITI Aayog, on Tuesday has said that India needs to focus on higher education to improve the quality of professionals in the country.

Speaking at an event organised by the Vivekananda Foundation, Dr. V K Saraswat talked about the need to focus on higher education structure in India.

"We at NITI Aayog, for a long time has tried to improve the higher education system in India as we felt that primary education was getting all the due attention while the higher education remained neglected," he said.

Addressing the event "Towards More Effective Education: Emergence of STEM education in India," he claimed that science education needs to be revamped and a national level body should be formed to facilitate this transformation.

"The Ministry of Human Resource and Development had agreed for the national level body," Saraswat said.

The NITI Aayog member also said that one of the reasons for the growing unemployment crisis in India was due to the lack of qualified professionals.

"We have numerous engineers and other professionals but we should focus on quality, not on quantity. The quality of professionals that we have is what worries me today," he added.

Dr V K Saraswat, who is the member of Niti Aayog has said that India needs to focus on higher education to improve the quality of professionals that we have. " we at the Niti Aayog for long try to improve the higher education system as we felt that primary education was getting all the due attention but the higher education was not. We went with the same to the HRD minister. The Minister had then told me that she was expecting our national body to be formed look after science education and higher education of the country. Soon after Minister changed, so we went to the new HRD Minister as well with our idea to form a body to look after higher education in the country" Saraswat said.
He was then informed that a new body under Kasturi Nandan was being said to look after his concerns. Saraswat further said one of the reasons for unemployment was that India wasn't producing quality professionals. " today if we see we have numerous engineers and other professionals but we should focus on quality not on quantity. The quality of professionals that we have is what worries me today" he added.
