NCW writes to Gujarat DGP after female bank employee slapped by cop

Soon after a video of a police officer threatening bank employees in Gujarat's Surat surfaced on the internet, the National Commission of Women (NCW) here on Wednesday took suo motu cognisance of the incident. The NCW has written to the Director-General of Police of Gujarat, directing an immediate investigation into it and strict action against the guilty, reports Chandrakala Choudhury.

New Delhi: After an alleged attack by a cop on a woman bank employee inside bank premise in Surat went viral, the National Commission for Women has written to the DGP, Gujrat asking for immediate action into the matter and strict action against the convict.

The commission came across the video in twitter shared by BankersUnited@Official. The commission immediately took Suo moto cognizance of the incident and several tweets that were brought to the commission’s notice thereafter.

According to reports, in the video, a policeman, not in uniform, can be seen hitting a female employee and threatening staff members of a bank, after which the woman underwent a fracture.

“The Commission strongly condemns this alleged brutality on a female banker who was merely doing her job. NCW reiterates its stand that every woman is entitled to a life of dignity and safety at the workplace. The Commission has also written to the Director-General of Police, Gujarat asking for an immediate investigation into the matter and strict action against the guilty and to appraise the commission for the action taken at the earliest ”, NCW stated.

It is learned that an unknown person came in asking for an entry to be done in the passbook when the female employee refused to do it saying the bank time was over, the person allegedly started to verbally abuse the staff, following which, the female staff started shooting the incident. Offended by this, he opened the door of the area that is restricted for visitors, went inside and hit the female employee. ‘

Earlier today, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman also took cognisance of the incident and tweeted saying she spoke to the Surat Police Commissioner and that he has assured that action would be initiated against the guilty. ‘

“We will closely be following the matter, Wish to assure that the safety of all members and staff in banks are of importance to us. Amid challenges, banks are extending all services to our people. Nothing should threaten their safety and dignity”, the Finance Minister tweeted.
