NAM Summit: PM Modi to skip for the 2nd time; Vice President to represent India

Vice President Venkaiah Naidu will be representing India at the NAM Summit scheduled to be held in Azerbaijan from October 25 to 26. Meanwhile, PM Modi will give the Summit a miss for the second time. Also, he is the first Indian Prime Minister to do so.

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will once again miss the Non-Alignment Movement (NAM) Summit scheduled to be held in Azerbaijan from October 25 to 26.

Vice President Venkaiah Naidu will be representing India at the Summit.

He will deliver India’s National Statement during the plenary meeting of the Summit. He is also expected to hold bilateral meetings with his counterparts from other NAM member countries on the sidelines of the Summit.

The Vice President will also meet members of the Indian community in Azerbaijan at a reception organized by Indian embassy on Oct 25.

PM Modi is giving a miss to the Summit for the second time. He is also the first Indian PM to Skip the NAM Summit since its formation in 1961, except for caretaker PM Charan Singh who missed it in 1979.

The 120 member nations bloc was started with 23 member nations at the peak of the cold war era. It came into existence through initiatives of former Indian PM Nehru and Yugoslavian President Josip Broz Tito. Its basic idea was to maintain neutrality at that time.
