Gorakhpur: In an unusual event, a 53-year-old mother and her 27-year old daughter exchanged their respective wedding vows with their partners at the same 'mandap'. The marriages of the women happened at a government-sponsored mass wedding function in Gorakhpur.
A total of 63 weddings took place under the state government's 'Mukhyamantri Samuhik Vivah Yojana' at Piprauli village.
Bela Devi (53), had lost her husband 25 years ago. The couple bore three daughters and two sons. At the event, she got married to Harihar's brother Jagdish (55), who was till now single.
Devi's daughter Indu (27) got married to Rahul at the wedding function.
Block Development Officers (BDO) Dr CS Kushwaha, Satyapal Singh, Ramesh Diwedi, Ratan Singh, Sunil Pandey were also present at the function.
Saptrash Kumar, Social Welfare Officer, said, "Under state government's Mukhyamantri Samuhik Vivah Yojana, poor and widows are given priorities. Villagers also lend a helping hand in selecting partners for the bride and the groom."
