Not having earned a single penny for more than a month, Sanjay, who used to earn his livelihood doing odd jobs such as repairing sewing machines and performing street plays in Jodhpur, was at the mercy of his neighbours to feed himself and his family.

But after exhausting all his savings and with the landlord asking him to either pay the rent or vacate the house, Sanjay decided to sell his wife’s gold ring, for which he got Rs. 6,000, to purchase a bullock cart and leave for his village, more than 1,000 kilometre away.

“I am going home because of the lockdown. Haven’t earned anything since the lockdown was imposed,” Sanjay told ETV Bharat.
