Major Shweta Pandey, the army officer, who assisted PM Modi hoist the tricolour

On the occasion of Independence Day, the Prime Minister of India unfurls the national flag as a part of the ceremony that takes place at Red Fort, Delhi. And the PM was assisted in the process, by a woman army officer. It is inspiring to see women army officers taking charge of important duties.

Lucknow: On India's 74th Independence Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was assisted by a woman Army officer, Major Shweta Pandey, when he unfurled the Tricolour at Red Fort in Delhi.

Major Pandey is the first woman officer to carry the national flag and lead a first-ever tri-services Indian Armed Forces Contingent during Russia’s Victory Day Parade at Red Square in Moscow in June this year.

Major Shweta, who belongs to Lucknow, led the first-ever Tri-Services Indian Armed Forces contingent at the Victory Day parade in Moscow, a few months ago.

Speaking to ETV Bharat over the telephone, Ram Ratan Pandey, father of Major Shweta Pandey, said that he is proud of his daughter as she unfurled the Tricolour at Red Fort with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the occasion of Independence Day.

Major Shweta's mother, Amita Pandey, is a Sanskrit and Hindi professor, meanwhile, her father, Ram Ratan Pandey, worked as additional director, finance, for the UP government.

"Unfurling India's tricolour and that too on the occasion of Independence Day, being the flagship officer at the flag hoisting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and being present at the flag hoisting with the Prime Minister, is a huge thing in itself and it gives me great satisfaction. I am proud of serving my country," Maj Pandey told to ETV Bharat.

Maj Pandey was commissioned in the army in March 2012 from the Officers Training Academy (OTA) in Tamil Nadu’s Chennai. She also holds a degree in computer science and has done her advance course in radars. She is an alumnus of the City Montessori School (CMS) in Lucknow.
