LS Polls 2019: After Wayanad Rahul files his nomination from Amethi

Congress president Rahul Gandhi has filed his nomination today from the Amethi Lok Sabha seat in Uttar Pradesh, which he has been representing since 2004. Before filing the nomination, he held a road show and accompanied by his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and his mother Sonia Gandhi. Amethi goes to polls in the fifth phase on May 6.

Amethi (UP): With UPA president Sonia Gandhi and sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra by his side, Congress president Rahul Gandhi Wednesday filed his nomination papers for the Amethi Lok Sabha seat at the Collectorate here.

According to Congress District Spokesperson Anil Singh:

  • Rahul will file his nomination papers from Amethi today.
  • He will be accompanied by his mother Sonia Gandhi and sister Priyanka Gandhi, while filing the nomination.
  • He will undertake a road show from Munshiganj - Darpipur in Gauriganj, before filing the nomination.
  • He has been representing Amethi in Lok Sabha since 2004
  • BJP leader Smriti Irani is contesting against Rahul Gandhi in Amethi.

According to sources, BJP's Smriti Irani, is likely to file her nomination papers for Amethi, a day later on Thursday.

In the 2014 general elections, Irani was defeated by Rahul Gandhi by over one lakh votes.

This time, the Congress president is contesting from two Lok Sabha seats.

Last Thursday, Rahul Gandhi had filed his nomination from Wayanad in Kerala and said he will be fighting the Lok Sabha polls from a second seat in the South, in addition to the party bastion Amethi in the North, to send a message of unity and that "India is One".Amethi goes to polls in the fifth phase on May 6.
