Gujarat: The Central government allocated Rs 3,150 crore in the Union Budget 2020 for a maritime museum coming up at Gujarat's Lothal, the foundation stone of which was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in March 2019.
The museum has been PM Modi's dream ever since he was serving as the Chief Minister of Gujarat.
It was in the year 2003 that PM Modi had expressed his desire to set up a museum at Lothal - a Harrapan site on the Saurashtra coast in the state - while inaugurating the Mundra International Container Terminal.

Apart from displaying various artefacts, the museum is also supposed to serve as an independent research centre for marine archaeology, archaeology of boat building, reconstruction of maritime history and the materials traded for building boats, among other things.
The museum is being set up with technical help from the Portuguese Maritime Heritage Museum.
