Intense rainfall activity expected over north, central and east India during next 4-5 days: IMD

New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday predicted very heavy rainfall over east, north and central India during the next five days and issued a red alert for Odisha for August 26 and for Chhattisgarh, a day later.

It said a low-pressure area (cyclonic circulation) over north Bay of Bengal and its neighbourhood is very likely to move west-northwestwards during the next four-five days.

Under the influence of this system, widespread rainfall with isolated heavy to very heavy falls are very likely over Odisha, Gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand till August 28 and over Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and west Rajasthan during August 26-28, the IMD added.

Isolated extremely heavy falls are also very likely over Odisha on August 25-26 and over Chhattisgarh on August 27.

Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh government on Tuesday said over 1,000 villages in 18 districts of the state have been affected by floods.

However, Relief Commissioner Sanjay Goyal said the flood situation is being monitored and "there is an overall improvement".

"As many as 1,090 villages in 18 districts have been affected by the flood. Among the affected villages, 620 are marooned," he said.

The districts hit by the deluge are Ambedkarnagar, Ayodhya, Azamgarh, Bahraich, Ballia, Barabanki, Basti, Deoria, Farrukhabad, Gonda, Gorakhpur, Kasganj, Pilibhit, Kushinagar, Lakhimpur Kheri, Mau, Santkabirnagar and Sitapur.

The relief commissioner said the Sharda river at Lakhimpur Kheri''s Palia Kalan, the Saryu at Elginbridge in Barabanki, Ayodhya and Turtipar in Ballia were flowing above the danger mark.

In case of deaths in flood-related incidents, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has directed officials to provide relief to the family members of the victims within 24 hours, the relief commissioner said.

Heavy rains triggered by fresh low-pressure area lash Odisha

Bhubaneswar: Incessant rainfall triggered by a fresh low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal disrupted normal life in parts of Odisha on Tuesday, officials said.

The low-pressure area, formed over north Bay of Bengal on Monday, has now become well marked and lies in the same region, the Meteorological Centre here said.

Besides triggering heavy to very heavy and even extremely heavy rainfall in parts of Odisha over the next three days, the system is likely to cause squally weather with the high-velocity wind having speed up to 55 kmph along and off the Odisha coast, it said.

This is the fifth low-pressure area formed over the Bay of Bengal in August.

Four back-to-back low-pressure systems on August 4, 9, 13 and 19 have caused heavy rainfall in the state, leading to flood-like situations in several areas, particularly the Malkangiri district.

Under the influence of the new low-pressure area, several places in districts such as Balasore, Bhadrak, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Jajpur, Cuttack, Khurda, Cuttack and Dhenkanal were lashed by rainfall of varying intensity since Monday night, officials said.

Water-logging was also experienced in some low-lying areas, disrupting life, officials said.

Water level in Kalaburgi's Sonna Barrage rises due to water release from Veer dam

Kalaburagi (Karnataka): The water level has increased at the Sonna barrage in Kalaburagi district after water was released from the Veer dam situated in Maharashtra, an official said.

The water inflow to Sonna barrage was 21,365 cusecs and outflow to Bheema river was 20,423 cusecs. People have been warned not to go along the river banks or let their cattle into the river for drinking water.

The water level in the reservoir was recorded at 405.6 metre at 8 am today.

Notably, Maharashtra and other neighbouring states such as Gujarat, Karnataka have been receiving heavy rainfall from the past couple of weeks causing flooding at many places.

These states are expected to receive more downpour during the next couple of days.

Lucknow: Light to moderate rain and thundershower occurred at isolated places over the state in the past 24 hours, the meteorological department said.

Kheri's Palia Kalan and Bahraich's Nanpara received 4 mm rainfall each, Bhinga in Shrawasti 3mm, Ballia and Ayodhya 2 mm each, and Bhatpurwahghat in Sitapur, Baheri in Bareilly, Dataganj in Badaun and Suar in Rampur 1 mm each.

The weatherman has forecast rain and thundershower at many places in the state on Wednesday.

Heavy rain is very likely at isolated places over east UP and moderate to severe thunderstorm accompanied by lightning is very likely at isolated places over the state, the Met department said.

Some areas of Jammu and Kashmir and Uttarakhand are at moderate risk of flash floods for the next six hours, the Central Water Commission (CWC) informed on Tuesday.

"Flash Flood Guidance issued by IMD valid for 6 hours from 0530 hrs on August 25, 2020, in Jammu and Kashmir and Uttarakhand is appended. Moderate threat over some watersheds and neighbourhood areas of Puch, Reasi and Ramban districts of Jammu and Kashmir subdivision and Uttarakashi, Rudraprayag, Chamoli and Bageshwar districts in Uttarakhand subdivision," the CWC tweeted.

The Commission further warned of flash flooding in Gujarat in the next 12 hours.

New Delhi: Bihar, Rajasthan, Odisha and Uttarakhand are likely to receive heavy rainfall today, predicted India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday.

"Heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places over Gangetic West Bengal and Gujarat and heavy rainfall at isolated places over Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, West Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Assam and Meghalaya, Madhya Maharashtra, Konkan and Goa, Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal and Kerala and Mahe," the IMD stated.

The IMD has further stated that the low-pressure area lies over Southwest Rajasthan and neighbourhood. It is likely to persist during next 24 hours.

"The monsoon trough is active and south of its normal position. It is likely to remain active during the next 2-3 days. Under the influence of the above systems, widespread rainfall with isolated heavy to very heavy falls very likely over Gujarat state and heavy falls over southwest Rajasthan on August 25," the advisory from the IMD read.

"Strong wind (speed reaching 50-60 kmph) very likely over southwest and adjoining westcentral Arabian Sea and north Bay of Bengal; (wind speed reaching 45-55 kmph) over North Arabian sea and along and off Gujarat coast," it added. (ANI)
