Kolar(Karnataka): With environmental experts raising serious concerns about climate change and sustainable development, people across the country, including villages, are undertaking various measures to tackle it. One such example is a village in Karnataka where people have initiated the process to plant trees for future generation to make the place clean and green.

Villagers of Karola village have decided to plant more than 5000 trees in an effort to tackle climate change. People of M.Gollahalli village in Mulbagal Taluk of Kolar district have started an environmental drive after realising the after-effects of COVID-19.

Gopal, the village sarpanch, said that every individual has decided to plant five trees and each house is being given 15 plants. We have started planting neem, peepal, bamboo, banyan, and other medicinal plants for environmental benefits.

"Oxygen is vital for human survival. For the blood to flow into every cell of the body, oxygen is important. There are around 700 people in the village and we should be ideally having 5000 trees. As of now, we have 2000 trees, so we are planting more trees. We have brought around 250 saplings of peepal tree and 350 of neem trees and we have also included medicinal plants. Each house is given 15 saplings to plant and they are planting," Gopal told ETV Bharat.

The villagers have undertaken this initiative to increase the amount of oxygen supply which has gone down due to the increasing pollution level. It is an attempt to preserve, protect, and promote the existing environment for future generations.

The idea is to plant more than 5000 trees and in an attempt to make it happen, at least 2000 trees have been collected from the forest department. With the number of trees reducing in the cities, pollution has raised an alarm for people which has propelled the villagers to start the tree plantation drive.

"Pollution level has gone up in the city and the trees in the villages have been chopped down. So we have collected around 2000 trees from the forest department and provided 15 saplings to each house. Peepal tree saplings are predominant because it is said it provides maximum oxygen. At least two plants of peepal tree species are given to each house and we have planted them today. Three years back we have planted nearly 10,000 trees", said a local.

Few locals also said that the increasing number of diseases due to an increase in pollution level, urbanisation and deforestation is also worrisome. The villagers do not want the concept of a green environment to be confined only to the books for the future generation, prompting them to take such measures.
