Jhansi (Uttar Pradesh): Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force (STF) team along with Kanpur encounter accused Vikas Dubey, who was arrested in Ujjain has reached Kanpur on Friday morning.

Vikas Dubey is the main accused in the Kanpur shoot out case and was arrested by the police in Ujjain on Thursday morning. He was on the run for the last six days and had come to Ujjain to offer prayers at Temple, where he was identified by a security guard at the shrine.

The gangster is the main accused in the encounter that took place in Bikru village in Chaubeypur area of Kanpur last week, in which a group of assailants allegedly opened fire on a police team, which had gone to arrest Dubey. Eight police personnel were killed in the encounter.

Dubey managed to escape and the Uttar Pradesh police launched a hunt for him and raised the bounty on Dubey to Rs 5 lakh.

Temple sources said that Dubey reached the temple gate in the morning and purchased a Rs 250 ticket from a counter near the police post. When he went to a nearby shop to buy 'prasad' for the deity, the shop owner identified him and alerted police, they added.

When the policemen asked him his name, he loudly said 'Vikas Dubey', following which the cops and private security personnel deployed at the temple nabbed him, the sources said.

After Dubey was arrested, the information was passed on to the Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan who alerted the UP CM Yogi Adityanath.

"I have spoken with UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. Further action will be taken. The Madhya Pradesh Police will hand over Vikas Dubey to Uttar Pradesh Police," Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said.

After his arrest, the Congress also upped its ante on the Yogi Government, party General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Thursday demanded a CBI inquiry into the whole case. Priyanka Gandhi said in order to reveal the nexus between the criminal and the higher-ups, an inquiry by the CBI was necessary.

Dubey's arrest is a major setback to the UP Special Task Force that failed to nail the gangster. The STF, which had been claiming till late on Wednesday that Dubey was hiding in Delhi-NCR, was blissfully unaware that he had moved across to Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh. There is a distance of 773 kilometres from Faridabad where Dubey was reportedly seen last on Tuesday and Ujjain where he finally 'surrendered'.
