IUML moves SC seeking clarification on link between NRC and NPR

New Delhi: The Indian Union Muslim League has moved to the Supreme Court on Thursday filing an application seeking directions from the apex court to the Central government to clearify if the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and National Population Register(NPR) are linked and if the NRC will be implemented across India.

"Prime Minister have been giving contradictory statements on the NRC and its implementation across the country and its link to the National Population Register (NPR) exercise being carried out across the country," reasoned the petition for asking clarification.

The petition asked the court to put on hold the NRC and NPR exercises till the petition is pending before the Supreme Court.

IUML has filed two petitions in the Supreme Court. One has sought a stay on CAA operation and the other on NRC and NPR. Its petition challenging the CAA is supposed to be heard on 22nd January later this month.

asking a clarification. It also cited MoS for Home ministry Kiren Rijju's speech in the Rajya Sabha in 2014 in which he said that NPR is the first step towards creation of NRC.
