Another Kerala Minister contracts coronavirus

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Agriculture Minister V S Sunil Kumar has tested positive for COVID-19, becoming the third member of the Pinarayi Vijayan cabinet to be infected by the deadly virus. His office said Kumar, who returned to Thiruvananthapuram two days ago, had complained about the breathing problem.

"He underwent a medical check-up. His samples were collected for lab examination and its result came today. The Minister will be admitted to Government Medical College Hospital here," an official said.

Odisha reports 4,237 new COVID-19 cases, record 15 fresh fatalities

Bhubaneswar: Odisha's COVID-19 tally rose to 1,92,548 on Wednesday as 4,237 more people tested positive for the infection, while record 15 fresh fatalities pushed the state's coronavirus death toll to 736, a health official said.
         Odisha had registered 14 coronavirus deaths on September 11 and August 29, he said.

Telangana reports 10 more deaths, 2,296 new COVID-19 cases

Hyderabad: Telangana recorded 2,296 fresh coronavirus cases, pushing the aggregate to 1.77 lakh, while the toll rose to 1,062 in the state with 10 fatalities.

Out of the 2,296 cases, 321 were reported in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), followed by Rangareddy 217, Medchal Malkajgiri 173, Nalgonda 155, Karimnagar 136 and other districts, a state government bulletin said on Wednesday, providing data as of 8 PM on September 22. The cumulative recovered cases stood at 1.46 lakh, while 29,873 were under treatment.

Arunachal reports record 249 new COVID-19 cases, 1 fresh fatality

Itanagar: Arunachal Pradesh registered its highest single-day spike in COVID-19 cases on Wednesday as 249 people, including seven security personnel, tested positive for the infection, a health official said. One more patient has succumbed to the infection, taking the northeastern state's coronavirus death toll to 14, he said.

Maha: Thane COVID-19 tally rises to 1,61,659

Thane: The COVID-19 tally in Thane has gone up to 1,61,659 with the addition of 1,406 new cases in the Maharashtra district, an official said on Wednesday.
The death toll in the district reached 4,205 as 33 more patients succumbed to the disease on Tuesday, he said. As of now, there are 18,101 active COVID-19 cases in the district while 1,39,353 patients have recovered.

Andaman & Nicobar Islands COVID-19 tally rises to 3,691

Port Blair: The COVID-19 tally of Andaman and Nicobar Islands rose to 3,691 on Wednesday as 18 more people tested positive for the infection, a health official said.

Fifteen new patients were detected during contact tracing, while three have travel history, he said.Ten more people have been cured of the disease, the official said.

Pondy adds 543 new COVID-19 cases, tally touches 24,227

Puducherry:  Puducherry logged 543 fresh cases of coronavirus and eight related deaths on Wednesday, taking the total infection count to 24,227.
Director of Health and Family Welfare S Mohan Kumar said eight more people, including two women, succumbed to the viral infection during the last 24 hours ending 10 am on Wednesday and the overall toll rose to 481.

Jharkhand reports 1,275 new COVID-19 cases, 15 fresh fatalities

Ranchi: Jharkhand's COVID-19 tally rose to 73,948 on Wednesday as 1,275 more people tested positive for the infection, a health official said. Fifteen more patients succumbed to the infection, pushing the state's coronavirus death toll to 641, he said.

Jharkhand now has 13,280 active coronavirus cases, while 60,027 people have been cured of the disease so far, the official said.

Sikkim CM's wife test positive for COVID-19
Gangtok:  Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang's wife Krishna Rai and some of her family members have tested positive for COVID-19.In a Facebook post she said: "We made all possible efforts to keep corona at bay but unfortunately we got infected. I appeal to those who came in contact with us to get themselves tested and my close contacts to go into quarantine."

Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh ordered strict COVID-19 protocol enforcement

Chandigarh: Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh on Tuesday ordered strict enforcement of COVID-19 safety protocols and strengthening of the public awareness campaigns across the state.

Despite being satisfied at increased testing in rural areas with many panchayats passing formal resolutions in support of the government efforts, Captain Amarinder expressed concern over the continuing violation of the rules and protocols on COVID-19 safety by the people.

"The state government had no option but to open up but people have to realise their responsibility," he said during a COVID-19 review video conference, stressing the need to bring down the Case Fatality Rate (CFR), which continues to be higher for Punjab than the national average.
Taking serious note of people continuing to not wear masks and not giving up spitting on the roads despite the critical situation in the state, the Chief Minister directed DGP Dinkar Gupta to ensure punishment for those found violating the rules.

India's COVID-19 tally crosses 56 lakh mark

India's COVID-19 case tally crosses 56-lakh mark with a spike of 83,347 new cases & 1,085 deaths in last 24 hours.  The total case tally stands at 5,646,011 including 9,68,377 active cases, 45,87,614 cured/discharged/migrated & 90,020 deaths: Ministry of Health & Family Welfare

There were 1,085 new deaths as the toll in the past eight months reached 90,020 and the total cases mounted to 56,46,010. India is the second worst-hit country by the pandemic just behind the US, where they have recorded 2 lakh deaths.

Out of the total cases in India, 9,68,377 are currently active, and 45,87,613 have been discharged, making the rate of recoveries best in the world. While the recovery rate stands at 81.25 per cent, the fatality rate has come down to 1.59 per cent. Maharashtra continues to be the worst-hit with a total of 12,42,770 cases, including 33,407 deaths, followed by Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh. 

According to the data from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), India conducted 9,53,683 sample tests in a single day on Tuesday, taking the total number of samples tested so far to 6,62,79,462.

The Union Health Ministry had said that it has increased the testing infrastructure exponentially. Till July 7, India had tested 1 crore samples and it took us 27 days to add 2 crore tests. By August 3, we had tested 3 crore samples. During this period, the laboratories were increased from 1,100 to 1,300 in the country.


On Tuesday, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) said that the efficacy of the Covid-19 vaccine in India might not reach 100 per cent. "We are aiming for 100 per cent efficacy but may land between 50 to 100 per cent. However, it still would be an effective vaccine against the virus," Balram Bhargava, ICMR Director-General said.

India's COVID-19 testing capacity surges to over 12 lakh daily tests: Health Ministry

New Delhi: India's COVID-19 testing capacity has surged to more than 12 lakh daily tests, said Union Health Ministry on Wednesday. "India's testing capacity has surged to more than 12L daily tests. Higher than 6.5 cr total tests have been conducted across the country. Higher testing leads to early identification of positive cases. As evidence revealed, eventually positivity rate will fall," Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) said in a tweet.

The Ministry said that several States/UTs have demonstrated better COVID-19 response with higher Tests Per Million (TPM) than the national average. "As India rides the wave of very high testing, several States/UTs have demonstrated better COVID19 response with higher Tests Per Million (TPM) and commensurate lower positivity rate than the national average," it said. 

With a spike of 75,083 new cases and 1,053 deaths, India's COVID-19 count crossed 55-lakh on Tuesday, according to the Union Health Ministry. The total case tally stands at 55,62,664 including 9,75,861 active cases, 44,97,868 cured and discharged or migrated patients.
