New Delhi: With the commissioning of the Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC), Indian Railways is aiming to increase the speed of its trains – news that will bring big cheer to passengers. According to the information given by the Railway Minister Piyush Goyal in a written reply to a question in Lok Sabha recently, Indian Railways is constructing more than 3,000 km of DFC.
This project, which is being implemented by the Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India (DFCCIL), would enable freight trains to run at speed of 100 km per hour.
With dedicated tracks for the movement of freight trains, it will allow faster movement of Freight trains which will take 30 minutes to reach the destination and it will provide major relief is to the environment.
This will provide relief from air pollution, which is now grappling with the whole world.
While talking to ETV Bharat, Vedprakash, GM of DFCC, said that the freight trains have started operating in some railways routes. After the completion of the construction work on the remaining railway block, this service will start completely, which will take about four years.
Vedprakash said that all the four metros of the country (Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata are being connected to it. This will go a long way in transporting goods from one place to the other. Both passenger and Freight trains operate on the same track now. But after the formation of DFCC, when a separate track for freight trains will be found, then the number of freight trains will increase, which will strengthen the economy.
According to the estimates so far, about 58 per cent of the revenue will start coming from this.
Vedprakash said that goods equal to 1300 trucks can be loaded in one rake (whole train) of a goods train. This will reduce the load on road traffic and also provide relief from air pollution.
According to a study, 28 per cent of the pollution is only spread by vehicles from which 9 per cent is spread only by trucks and tractors. The remaining two-wheelers cause 7 per cent pollution, 5 per cent from three-wheelers and 3 per cent pollution from buses.
In such a situation, the load of the truck will be reduced from the roads when freight from DFCC. Which is going to benefit both the traffic and the environment.
He explains that the speed of passenger trains will increase once a separate track is made for the goods trains. Also, trains will start running on time as compared to now.
Under the DFC project, the 1,856 km long Eastern DFC will comprise of an electrified double-track segment, between Dankuni, West Bengal and Khurja, Uttar Pradesh and an electrified single-track segment, between Ludhiana (Dhandarikalan), Khurja and Dadri. While the Western DFC will cover a 1,504 km long distance of double line electric track from Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust, located in the financial capital, Mumbai to Dadri via Vadodara-Ahmedabad-Palanpur-Phulera-Rewari section.
