New Delhi: With an aim to strengthen cooperation between India and Uzbekistan on issues of counter-terrorism, organized crime, and human trafficking, an agreement on strategic cooperation was signed between the two countries in New Delhi on Wednesday.
"An Agreement on Security Cooperation between the Ministry of Home Affairs of India and the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Uzbekistan was signed by Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Uzbekistan Internal Affairs Minister Pulat Bobojonov," the Home Ministry said in a statement.
During the meeting, the two sides discussed issues of mutual interest, including bilateral counter-terrorism cooperation, capacity building and training for the Uzbek security personnel in Indian institutions, border guarding and disaster management, according to the statement.
Emphasizing the strategic partnership, the ministers welcomed increased cooperation between India and Uzbekistan in the area of security cooperation.
The Home Ministry said both sides affirmed that the visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Uzbekistan in 2015 and 2016, and the visit by his Uzbekistan counterpart to India in October last year and in January have provided a new impetus to the relationship.
After the bilateral talks, Uzbekistan Internal Affairs Minister Pulat Bobojonov felicitated Home Minister Amit Shah in the North Block. Bobojonov is on a bilateral visit to India from Wednesday to Saturday.
India and Uzbekistan inked three MoUs pertaining to military medicine and military education during Defence Minister Rajnath Singh's three-day visit to Tashkent this month.
