India-Maldives inaugurate four key bilateral initiatives signed last year

Prime Minister Modi and Maldivian President Ibrahim Solih initiated four major projects signed last year. Speaking at an event where a fast interceptor vessel was gifted to the Maldives through video-conferencing, Modi said the Indian government's 'Neighbourhood First' and Male's 'India First' policies have strengthened bilateral cooperation in all sectors.

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Maldivian President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih launched multiple projects via video conferencing on Wednesday. These projects were agreed upon when PM Modi and President Mohamed Solih met last year.

Both the countries had signed six agreements to bolster their special relationship and bilateral cooperation in key areas like defence and maritime security.

Speaking at an event where a fast interceptor vessel was gifted to the Maldives through video-conferencing, Modi said the Indian government's 'Neighbourhood First' and Male's 'India First' policies have strengthened bilateral cooperation in all sectors.

Both the nations exchanged of MoUs for three grant projects for setting up neighbourhood fish plants in the southernmost atoll of Addu.

India has also gifted 'Made in India’ Patrol vessel named "KAAMIYAAB” to the Maldives National Defence Force. This vessel will Maldivian forces to strengthen its maritime security. Notably, the first Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was for cooperation in the fields of hydrography.

The other agreements included on the establishment of passenger and cargo services by sea, cooperation in customs capacity building between the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs of India and the Maldives Customs Service.

With the number of Indian tourists doubling in the Maldives in 2019, India has initiated the process to roll out RuPay cards in the Maldives. Besides, the government has also initiated an LED lighting project in Male. Exchange of an MoU between National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and the Bank of Maldives (BML) to launch the RuPay Card in Maldives was also initiated.

"RuPay payment mechanism will further ease the travel of Indians to the Maldives. I'm glad that this has been launched through the Bank of Maldives. Today we dedicated LED street lighting to the people of Male. India is very happy to bring to them benefits of these environment-friendly lights," PM Modi said.

The prime minister also said that "as a close friend and maritime member, India is committed to partnering with the Maldives for democracy and development".

"We will also enhance our cooperation for peace and mutual security in the Indian Ocean Region," Modi said.

The other agreements between the two countries include the establishment of passenger and cargo services by sea, cooperation in customs capacity building between the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs of India and the Maldives Customs Service.

An MoU was also signed last year between the National Centre for Good Governance, Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances and Maldives Civil Service Commission on Training and Capacity Building Programme for Maldivian civil servants.

Intro:New Delhi: Taking it's neighbourhood first policy ahead, Prime Minister Modi and Maldivian President Ibrahim Solih launched four important initiatives which were announced in the last one year. To support livelihoods of the Maldives island communities in the Addu, both countries have signed MoUs for three grant projects for setting up of fish plants.

With number of Indian tourists just doubling in Maldives in 2019 itself, India has launched RuPay card to make it easier for Indian revellers. The launch of the Global RuPay Card in Maldives through the Bank of Maldives will pave the way for higher tourist arrivals from India. Maldives will be the sixth country to have RuPay card. Conclusion:India has donated 2500 LED streetlights to Male which were recently installed. These LED lights will save 80% energy and 8.35 Maldivian Rupees in Male.

Not only this, earlier today morning the Union Cabinet has given nod to India's Election Commission to enter into a Memorendum of Understanding with Maldivian Election Commission to train it in electoral management.
