Nahan (Himachal Pradesh): As the number of COVID-19 cases are increasing in the country, so is the need for face masks. However as the face masks are getting expensive and out of stock, an octogenarian woman in Himachal Pradesh is helping the people to cope up the shortage.
Popularly known as Amma, Asha Lata Pundir, who belongs to Nahan even at this ripe age of 80 is stitching face masks for people. Amma is a ray of hope at this time as she is making her significant contribution.
Asha Lata, who is the relative of Shimla parliamentary constituency MP Suresh Kashyap, retired as a sewing teacher at the age of 58 and since then she has never used a sewing machine.
The country and the state are facing the crisis of the corona pandemic, so after about 20 years, at the age of 80, she started working on the sewing machine again. Her purpose is to prepare masks for the protection of people in the wake of the Coronavirus.
These days Asha Lata is engaged in the task of making masks. This mask made of cloth can be washed and reused. She has been stitching masks with her machine from the 15th of March and sends it to the needy people.
She has distributed around 300 masks to people. Asha Lata believes that to fight this pandemic, everyone should make masks in their homes and distribute them in their neighbourhood. In this time of crisis, there is no better thing than this. While talking to ETV Bharat, Asha Lata Pundir said that she used to work as a sewing teacher and she has retired 20 years ago.
She had quit sewing after retirement. But when this disease spread, after about 20 years, she decided to use the machine once again. She also said that if anyone wants to learn how to make a mask, she is also ready to teach them.
