Heavy rain predicted in Odisha, relief commissioner asks districts collectors to be alert

Bhubaneswar: Following the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast for heavy to very heavy rainfall in the state, the Special Relief Commissioner has issued an advisory for all the district collectors asking them to remain alert and monitor the situation.

The message from the SRC read, "Situation may be closely monitored. Districts under red, orange and yellow warning to remain prepared to meet any water logging/ localised flood-like situation including in urban areas. Local flash flood in hilly areas and landslides may occur."

"Alert BDOs, Tehsildars, EES of DOWR, RD and works on maintaining road communication, DOWR, particularly EE MI and EE drainages for the prompt response to breaches on embankments and cleaning of drainage channels," it read.

The SRC said that river embankments may also be kept on watch. Continuous vigil of low lying areas, dewatering wherever required including urban areas may be taken up. ODRAF and state fire services may be kept on alert. Advice for fishermen to be strictly implemented.

Heavy downpour likely in South Bengal districts: MeT

Kolkata: Widespread rain along with heavy to very heavy downpour is likely over the districts of South Bengal from Wednesday due to a formation of two back to back low-pressure areas over the Bay of Bengal, the Met department said here.

Owing to the two low-pressure systems, widespread rain is very likely over the districts of South Bengal from August 19 to 25, the weatherman said in its forecast.

A low-pressure area has formed in the morning of Wednesday over north Bay of Bengal and is likely to move westwards gradually and concentrate into a depression by Thursday afternoon, the Met said.

A second low-pressure area is likely to develop over the northwest Bay of Bengal around August 23, it said.

The Met department warned of a possible rise in water level in different rivers of South Bengal owing to heavy rain in catchment areas.

Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea on August 19 and 20.

Kerala: Death toll in Idukki landslide rises to 62

Idukki: The death toll in the Rajamala landslide, which was triggered by torrential rains, rose to 62 after a 9-year-old boy's body was recovered in the search operations in Pettimudi in Idukki district of Kerala.

The incident occurred in the Idukki district on August 7.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has said that the government will ensure the rehabilitation of the families affected in the landslide.

Thunderstorm accompanied by lightning was reported at isolated places in the state, it said.

Bengaluru: Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister Govind M Karjol visited Jamakhandi to inspect the Krishna river overflow in the affected areas to assess the damage caused due to flood.

Many villagers in the region shifted to other safe places. He urged the authorities to assess the damage and take the necessary precautions.

He also visited the Chikhakandi Bridge in Mudhol taluk, the village of Govinakoppa in Badami taluk on the bank of the Malaprabha river and the Chloechagudda village of Badami taluk on the edge of the Malaprabha river as well.

Rain lashed parts of the national capital on August 19. India Meteorological Department has predicted, 'generally cloudy sky with heavy rain' for Delhi today. Current temperature of Delhi is 28 degree Celsius.

The traffic movement has been obstructed from Dhaula Kuan towards Punjabi Bagh, the Delhi Traffic Police said.

As per the traffic police, the movement has been affected due to the breakdown of an MMV vehicle.

"Obstruction in traffic from Dhaula Kuan towards Punjabi Bagh due to breakdown of an MMV. Kindly avoid the stretch," the traffic police said in an advisory.

People rescued from flood-affected areas of Sukma in Chhattisgarh

A group of people who were stranded on National Highway 30 near Phandiguda area of Sukma district due to floods were rescued by the local administration on Tuesday.

The flood-hit victims were taken to safer places with the help of tube boats, officials said.

The roads in the flood-affected area were completely submerged in water. Even the heavy vehicles such as trucks parked at the roadside were seen partially under the water.

Mumbai rains: Modak Sagar lake starts overflowing, BMC opens dam gate

After heavy downpour in and around Mumbai, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation on Wednesday opened a gate of Modak Sagar dam after it started overflowing at 9:24 pm on Tuesday.

This dam supplies potable water to Mumbai and its nearby regions.

According to the India Meteorological Department, the city is expected to receive more rainfall in the next four-five days.

The Met department has also issued an orange alert for Kolhapur and Satara districts for Wednesday.

Delhiites woke up to light spells of rain on Wednesday morning bringing down the temperature to 28-degree Celcius.

According to the India Meteorological Department, thunderstorm with light to moderate intensity rain would occur over and adjoining areas including Noida, Meerut and few places of Entire Delhi during the next 2 hours.

Mumbai: Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to occur in Konkan and central Maharashtra over the next four to five days, the India Meteorological Department has said.

Mumbai and neighbouring Thane are likely to witness maximum rainfall intensity on Friday and Saturday when the Ganesh festival commences, IMD Mumbai centre's deputy director-general K S Hosalikar said.

The 10-day Ganesh festival will begin on August 22.
