Assam: With just a few hours left to the publication of the contentious National Register of Citizens (NRC) former Chief Minister of Assam Tarun Gogoi asked the Sarbananda Sonowal-led state government to ensure an "error-free" NRC with all "genuine citizens" finding their names in the contentious register.
Speaking to ETV Bharat, Gogoi said, "Thousands of people stare at an uncertain future after the publication of final NRC. We want the government to address this uncertainty. Those who are genuine Indian citizens must find their names in the NRC and we are with them."
With the fate of lakhs of people in Assam hanging in the balance, the senior Congress leader also went on to offer legal and moral assistance to all the "genuine citizens" excluded from the NRC which is scheduled to be published on August 31.
"We will take up their (genuine citizens) case whether it is in the Foreigners' Tribunal or the High Court or even Supreme Court for that matter. We are there to support every Indian citizen, irrespective of their religion. It doesn't really matter whether they are Hindu or Muslim, Assamese or Bengali, " said Gogoi.
On certain people from the Assamese community fearing politicisation of NRC, Gogoi said, "Some may try to politicise the NRC. If the government deals with the situation properly then there is little scope for the politicisation of the issue. If the government is really sincere in implementing an error-free NRC, then the scope of politicising the NRC process would be very less."
