Guwahati: Former Assam Chief Minister Syeda Anwara Taimur passed away in Australia on Monday at the age of 83. The lone woman former Chief Minister of Assam was residing in Australia with her son for the past few years. She had been ailing for a long period of time. She was born on 24 November 1936.

Ironically, the name of Taimur was missing from the National Register of Citizens and she planned to return home to initiate the process of enlisting herself, her family in the register of citizens of the State.

Taimur was the Chief Minister of Assam from December 6, 1980, to June 30, 1981. In the history of Assam, she is the only female and Muslim Chief Minister of the state. In the history of India also, Syeda Anwara Taimur is the first Muslim woman Chief Minister in the states. Her term as Chief Minister ended when the state was under President's rule for six months.

From 1983 to 1985 she became the PWD minister. Anwara was a lecturer in Economics in Debicharan Barua Girls College, Jorhat in 1956. She was an elected member of the Assam Assembly (MLA) in 1972, 1978, 1983, and 1991. In 1988, she was nominated to the Indian Parliament (Rajya Sabha). In 1991, she was appointed to the post of Minister for Agriculture in Assam.

She graduated from Aligarh Muslim University with economics honours. Anwara joined All India United Democratic Front in 2011. Syeda Anwara Taimur, former Assam Chief Minister is among the notable names excluded from the final draft of National Register of Citizens (NRC), which was released on 30 July. Her death has been widely mourned despite party lines.
