As the cold wave grips the national capital amid the farmer protests against the new agricultural laws passed by the Centre, a social activist distributed sanitary napkins to the female protesters.

Social activist and founder of People Against Rapes in Inda (PARI) Yogita Bhayana visited the Singhu border, which connects the national capital to the state of Haryana, and met the female protesters here.

As menstrual hygiene remains a major concern in such a situation where the agitators are living on the roads for over 18 days, Bhayana distributed sanitary napkins to the female protesters.

One of the female protesters while speaking to IANS said, "Menstrual hygiene remains a poignant issue in such a condition where we are living on roads. But, such help makes our struggle a bit easy and motivates us to stick to our aim. We would not leave from here untill the three black laws are taken back by the government."

The PARI founder along with volunteer Sana Shrivastava distributed more than 200 sanitary napkins along with water bottles to the protesters.

Speaking about the initiative, Bhayana said, "I was seeing that farmers are protesting against the new laws for a number of days and I stand in solidarity with the food givers of our nation."

"Since the weather is adding to their difficulties, I decided to distribute these sanitary napkins and water bottles to ease their dissent and tackle the problems they are facing in these harsh conditions."

Meanwhile, the crowd at Delhi-Haryana's Singhu Border is swelling up with each passing day. The protest site expanding towards the Delhi end and in view of the same, the number of barricades have increased along with the number of security personnel in the area.

Unhappy over not getting a satisfactory response to their demands, the agitating farmers on Wednesday announced they will block the Delhi-Jaipur highway on Sunday.

After blocking the Singhu, Tikri, Chilla and Ghazipur borders connecting Delhi to Chandigarh, Haryana, Noida (Uttar Pradesh) and Ghaziabad (Uttar Pradesh) respectively, the farmers will now block the Delhi-Jaipur highway that connects the national capital to Rajasthan.

Protesting farmers threaten to block Delhi-Jaipur highway today

Amid the prevailing deadlock between farmers and the central government over the new farm laws, the agitation in and around Delhi entered its 18th day on Sunday, with the protesters threatening to block Delhi-Jaipur highway.

Meanwhile, at Singhu (Delhi-Haryana) border, security has been beefed up in view of the farmers' call to intensify the agitation.

"Thousands of farmers will begin a tractor march at 11 am on December 13 from Shahjahanpur in Rajasthan and block the Jaipur-Delhi main road," Sanyukta Kisan Andolan leader Kamal Preet Singh Pannu had said on Saturday.

Earlier the farmers had planned to block the highways connecting the national capital with Jaipur and Agra on Saturday but deferred the Delhi-Jaipur highway blockade plan till Sunday.

The farmer union leader added they will sit on fast from 8 am to 5 pm on December 14 at Singhu border.

"On December 14, all farmer leaders will sit on fast sharing the stage at Singhu border. We want the government to take back the three farm laws; we're not in the favour of the proposed amendments. The Centre wants to thwart our movement but we'll continue it peacefully," he said.

Pannu alleged that the central government is trying to "fail" the farmers' movement, making attempts to divide the farmers.

"We'll foil any attempt by the Centre to fail our movement. The government made a few small attempts to divide us and instigate people. But, we will peacefully take this movement towards victory," he stated.

A delegation of farmers from Haryana, including those connected with Farmer Producer Organisation, had expressed their support, in a letter, for the three farm laws with the modifications proposed by the central government, on Saturday.

Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar had said, "Progressive farmer leaders from Haryana met me and submitted a memorandum with their signatures supporting the three farm laws. They also shared their experiences on how these laws are benefitting them."

Meanwhile, Tomar has appealed to the protesters to stop their agitation as talks are still going on.

Modi govt brought in new farm laws to double income of farmers, says Anurag Thakur

With continued farmers protests regarding the Central farm laws, Union Minister of State (MoS) for Finance Anurag Thakur has said that the government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi brought three laws to double the income of farmers and that the present government paid Minimum Support Price (MSP), double than what was paid by the previous UPA government.

"The three agriculture laws were brought so as to double the income of farmers. In the last six years, Modi government paid more than double MSP, then what was paid in the UPA time. During 2009-2014, the UPA government paid Rs 3,75,000 crore whereas the NDA government has paid over Rs 8,00,000 crore," the Minister said.

"The farmers have been given the freedom to sell their products to anybody in the country at any cost. They will own their farmlands, only their crops will be on contracts. The government has made this arrangement too. The Centre is working hard to double their income by 2022," he added.

"PM Modi, Agriculture Minister and other senior ministers have already stated that the MSP will be continued. The present government has increased the Rates of MSP after bringing new laws. Even during the pandemic, the Centre paid Rs 7,000 crore MSP to buy crops," he added.

"The government is spending Rs 1,00,000 crore on Agriculture Infrastructure Fund. This will help farmers have their own warehouses, cold storage and vehicles so that their crops are not only saved but can also be sold at a good price," he added.

Centre is talking about amendment in laws as farmers are right: Punjab Sports Minister

Punjab Sports and Youth Services Minister Rana Gurmit Singh Sodhi on Sunday said that the Centre is considering amendments in the new farm laws after acknowledging that the farmers are right.

"The Central Government has accepted that the farmers are absolutely right, that's the reason Centre is talking about amendment now. But I feel if they want to do justice with the farmers, these acts should be taken back," Sodhi said.

"The farmers are peacefully protesting, cooking their food, suffering in cold weather. They want the Central Government to withdraw these laws and sort out the matter immediately. Punjab Government is with the farmers since day one. Even our folk singers and regional singers who are coming in their support because even they come from farmers' families," he added.

Breaking through checkpoint near Kundli border, another batch of Punjab farmers reaches Delhi

Thousands of farmers under the banner of Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee (KMSC), led by its Punjab President Satnam Singh Pannu and General Secretary Sarwan Singh Pandher, reached Delhi on Sunday, breaking through a checkpoint near Kundli border.

As per the KMSC, the convoy was so large that it could not be controlled even with eight loudspeaker vehicles of Delhi Police, which also had to remove a second checkpoint one kilometer behind the Kundli border.

"A convoy of labourers and farmers broke through the first check post at Kundli border. Police used heavy tippers, trucks and other means to strengthen the second checkpoint," the release stated.

The KMSC also alleged that police misled the convoy at several places. "Thousands of vehicles remained stuck in traffic jams throughout the night and reached Delhi today."

Later addressing the media, the leaders said that that the Prime Minister's intention is to bring corporate houses into the agricultural sector, which is already private. "If the morcha has to be held till 2024 to repeal the agriculture laws, so be it. The agitation against the "anti-agriculture" laws will be intensified," said Pandher, adding that the Rail Roko morcha at Jandiala Guru town in Punjab has entered its 81st day.

Social activist distributes 200+ sanitary napkins to female protesters

The move will disrupt Delhi's supply chain from another direction as the farmers have planned to block the National Highway 48 that starts from Delhi and connects with Rajasthan via Haryana.

Delhi's Commissioner is keeping a close watch on the law and order situation as protesting farmers have threatened to enter the capital.
