SAD President Sukhbir Singh Badal said, "We'll go to Punjab now, where party leaders and workers will hold a meeting. Since Shiromani Akali Dal is a party of farmers, we will struggle at the forefront. There can be no talks with the Centre till the bills are taken back."

Protesting against new farm Bills, farmer commits suicide at Punjab's Muktsar

A 70-year-old farmer has died after consuming some poisonous substance during a protest against the new farm Bills in Muktsar district of Punjab, police said on Saturday.

Pritam Singh, a resident of Akkanwali village of Mansa district, consumed the poisonous substance Friday morning and died at a hospital later in the day, they said.

Singh had been participating in the protest since September 15 which is being organised by the Bharatiya Kisan Union (Ekta Ugrahan) at Badal village, the native of former chief minister Parkash Singh Badal          

The reason behind the farmer taking the extreme step is still not known, said the police.

The farmers' body, however, claimed that he was under debt.  

BKU (Ekta Ugrahan) general secretary Sukhdev Singh demanded the administration give compensation to the family of the deceased.

Farmers, Arhtiyas in Rohtak protest against agriculture reform bills 

Farmers and Arhtiyas (commission agents) in Rohtak are staging a protest against the agriculture reforms bills passed by the Lok Sabha.

The protesters assembled and raised slogans against the Centre's reforms and further said that their outcry will continue till the three bills are taken back.

Dimple Budhwar, president, Rohtak Anaj Mandi Arhtiyas Association said that the agriculture-related bills would completely destroy farmers.

"We are protesting against the three bills brought by the Centre which are anti-farmers, and anti-business. Our protests will continue till they are taken back. On September 20 we will gherao the offices of Deputy Commissioner (DC) across Haryana. Farmers, Aadtis and all others will take part in this, this will be a big protest," Badhwar told here.

 Demonstration against Centre in Amritsar over agriculture reform bills

Amritsar: Farmers held a protest demonstration against the Centre on Saturday over the recent bills in the agriculture sector.

As per the visuals of the protest, the farmers burned an effigy. The demonstration also led to a traffic jam.

Speaking to media, a leader of the farmers, Gurbachan Singh Chabba said, "We are protesting and have burned the effigy of the government. If these bills, which are against the farmers of Punjab, are passed in the Parliament then the farmers will be destroyed and the Mandi system as well."

"These bills are anti-farmer and should not be passed in the Rajya Sabha. The bills are for enabling loot by big corporates and companies. We are protesting against this," he further said.

Gurlal Singh, a farmer, said, "The decisions of the government have been against the people be it note ban, GST and now farm ordinances."

The Lower House passed the Farmers' Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Bill 2020 and Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement of Price Assurance and Farm Services Bill, 2020. It has already passed the Essential Commodities (Amendment), Bill.

These bills will now be tabled in the Rajya Sabha.
