Four suspected militants killed during Nagrota gunfight, two cops injured

Four suspected militants were killed on Thursday during a gunfight with security forces at Nagrota along Jammu-Srinagar National Highway in Jammu and Kashmir, officials said.

"During a routine check, a truck was intercepted at 5 am near the Ban toll plaza. The driver of the truck fled and is still at large. During the search, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel along with police were fired upon by the militants hiding in the truck, " Mukesh Singh, Inspector General (Jammu Zone), said while addressing a Press conference in Jammu.

He further said, "They (militants) used heavy ammunition and grenades were also lobbed at the security forces. The gunfight which lasted for around three hours started when forces retaliated."

"All the militants have been eliminated. A total of 11 AK-47 rifles have been recovered from them and further investigations are underway," he added.

Speaking about the motive of militants, the IGP said: "It appears that the militants were planning for a big attack. This kind of seizure is unprecedented. It is very much possible that they were targeting the District Development Councils election. However, investigations are still underway."

Meanwhile, two cops have also received minor injuries during the gunbattle.

The injured have been identified as Kuldeep Raj (32) of Akhnoor and Mohammad Ishaq Malik (40) of Neel Qasim Banihal Ramban by the police. Both have been admitted in GMC Jammu with neck injuries, their condition is said to be stable.

This is not the first time a gunfight has taken place in the area. Earlier in January, this year, militants had opened fire at a police team posted in the same area, triggering a gunfight in which three militants were killed and a policeman was injured.
