Unnao: Doctors at a private hospital in Uttar Pradesh removed 35 iron nails, 5 iron pellets and sand from the stomach of a young man.

Dr Santosh Verma, a surgeon at the Chandrakusum Hospital, said that most of the nails measured 5 cm and it took about three hours to remove the objects from the man's body.

"The patient was admitted to the hospital four days back after he complained of severe stomach pain. I was stunned after noticing the objects in his X-ray report after which the patient underwent a CT scan after doctors' recommendation. The CT scan and X-ray reports confirmed the same after which we decided to conduct the operation," said Dr Verma.

"However, he is not being able to narrate as to how he happened to swallow such a huge quantity of objects. The iron nails could have proved fatal if any of these had entered his intestine," the doctor added.

His family members were also not able to tell as to how he swallowed the objects, the surgeon said.

Echoing the same views, the patient's mother said that they are not aware as to how he swallowed such objects.

"Now, my son is doing fine and we are thankful to the doctors for their timely help," she added.

Radharaman Awasthi, a hospital staff, said that this was the first such operation in their hospital.
