Hyderabad: India has one of the lowest COVID-19 deaths per million population in the world with less than 1,000 fatalities registered daily since October 4, while the fatality rate of 1.52% on Friday was the lowest since March 22, the Union Health Ministry said.

These results have been boosted by 22 states and Union Territories which have demonstrated better performance and are reporting even lower deaths per million population compared to the national average, it said.

"The COVID-19 case fatality rate has been on the slide continuously. At the current figure of 1.52%, it is the lowest since March 22," it highlighted.

Delhi

New Delhi: Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad has tested positive for COVID-19 and has quarantined himself at home.

The 71-year-old Congress leader is the fourth senior party member to have tested positive for COVID-19. Earlier senior Congress leaders Ahmed Patel, Motilal Vora and Abhishek Singhvi had tested positive.

Maharashtra

Mumbai: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has allowed restaurants, bars, hotels and food courts to remain open from 7 am to 11.30 pm from Friday under the Maharashtra government’s 'Mission Begin Again'. Markets and other shops will be permitted to function from 7 am to 9.30 pm. Meanwhile, Thane is set to get its first post-COVID Care Centre next week. The centre, which will open in Majiwada, will have the capacity to monitor the recovery of 400 patients who have been discharged after recovering from COVID-19.

Bihar

Patna: Bihar’s Panchayati Raj Minister Kapil Deo Kamat succumbed to COVID-19 on Friday at AIIMS, Patna, family sources said. He was 70.

Kamat was 70 and survived by two sons and four daughters. His wife died a few months ago.

The JD(U) MLA from Babubarhi assembly constituency was admitted to the hospital on October 1 after he tested positive for the disease.

Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said that all devotees preparing to undertake the Sabarimala pilgrimage trek will have to produce a certificate showing that they are COVID-19 negative within 48 hours of starting the trek.

They would also have to produce a medical certificate certifying that they were fit enough to make the Sabarimala trek, he added.

Karnataka

Bengaluru: The Kodagu district administration said that COVID test report (RTPCR) done 48 hours before is mandatory to attend Cauvery Theerthodbava at Talacauvery in Kodagu on 17 October.

The administration also decided to celebrate Madikeri and Gonikoppa Dasara in a simple way on 17 October. Meanwhile, Kodagu Deputy Commissioner Annies Kanmani Joy announced the closure of all tourism destinations in Kodagu district from 17 to 26 October.

West Bengal

Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court directed the community Durga Puja organisers in West Bengal to spend 75 per cent of the Rs 50,000 grant given by the state government on the procurement of COVID protection equipment and the rest on strengthening public-police bonding.

A division bench comprising justices Sanjib Banerjee and Arijit Banerjee directed that the money given by the state to the Durga Puja committees cannot be used for any other purpose, and purchase bills have to be submitted to the authorities for audit.

Odisha

Bhubaneswar: Odisha on Friday reported its lowest single-day spike of 2,138 fresh COVID-19 cases for the first time in over a month and a half. With this, the positive caseload in the State reached 39,597,12 today which included 24,457 and 2,38,535 recoveries so far. Similarly, 15 persons succumbed to the disease in the last 24 hours taking the State’s death count to 1,102 in the State.

Uttarakhand

Dehradun: Uttarakhand Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat held a meeting to discuss the COVID-19 preventive measures in Dehradun on Friday and said awareness campaigns should be intensified for effective control over coronavirus.

He said that stickers should be put up on the doors of houses besides religious and tourist places, offices and vehicles in the State for awareness against COVID-19.
