Hyderabad: With 70,589 new patients, the coronavirus cases in India crossed 61 lakh-mark on Tuesday, data from the health ministry showed.
The death count from the highly contagious virus climbed to 96,318 with 776 more fatalities.
The number of recoveries reported in the past 24 hours is around 84,877, taking the total number of people who have fought off the virus past 51 lakh.
India is the second worst-affected country by the COVID pandemic, second only to the United States in the total number of active cases.

Delhi
New Delhi: Delhi Health Minister Satyendra Jain on Tuesday informed that the Delhi government has increased the number of COVID-19 beds by 1,000 in the national capital with 500 beds each in both private and government hospitals.
Responding to the Delhi High Court's notice to all the respondents on a plea moved by the Delhi government challenging a stay on its order directing private hospitals to reserve 80 per cent beds for COVID patients, the Health Minister said, "The high court has not given its decision yet, the hearing will be held on October 9. The government is trying its best and we will fight in the court."
Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, who was suffering from COVID-19 and dengue, was discharged from hospital on Tuesday.
Tamil Nadu
Chennai: Amid growing concerns over the spread of the novel coronavirus, Tamil Nadu government has extended COVID-19 lockdown till October 31, with some more relaxations.
The AIADMK announced on Twitter that the state has decided to extend the lockdown for another month till October 31, however, some more relaxations will be put in place.
Odisha
Bhubaneswar: At least 15 MLAs including Deputy Speaker Rajanikant Singh and three ministers have tested positive for COVID-19 ahead of the monsoon session of the Odisha Legislative Assembly starting on Tuesday, official sources said.
The infections were detected during a special drive to test samples of lawmakers for COVID-19 ahead of the monsoon session of the Assembly.
As many as 50 MLAs, including nine ministers, have tested positive for COVID-19 in Odisha so far. Many of them have completed their quarantine period.
Uttarakhand
Dehradun: As many as 61 prisoners of Haridwar central jail tested positive for COVID-19 on Monday, officials said.
The report of many prisoners are yet to come and prisoners, who have tested positive, have been isolated, they said.
Madhya Pradesh
Bhopal: Sub-Divisional Magistrate of Dabra, Raghavendra Pandey died due to coronavirus on Tuesday. Meanwhile, with 449 new cases on Tuesday, the state's tally stands at 23,524, out of which as many as 4,456 are active cases.
