COVID-19: Record spike of 1,672 cases in MP; 30 die

Madhya Pradesh on Thursday reported the highest single-day rise of 1,672 new coronavirus cases, which pushed the state's infection count to 68,586, health officials said.

With 30 people succumbing to the infection, the death toll rose to 1,483, they said.

Chhattisgarh records 837 fresh COVID-19 cases; 12 deaths

Chhattisgarh's COVID-19 tally rose to 36,520 on Thursday with the addition of 837 new cases, while the death toll climbed to 312 after 12 patients succumbed to the infection, a health official said.

As many as 730 people were discharged from various hospitals following their recovery, the official said.

With this, the state has recorded 18,950 recoveries, and now has 17,258 active cases, he said.

Of the 837 fresh cases, Raipur district alone accounted for 300 that took the case tally in the region to 13,278, he said.

The district has so far reported 161 casualties, the official said.

COVID-19 discharge rate inches past 84pc in Bengal, death toll rises to 3,394

The COVID-19 discharge rate in West Bengal rose to 84.02 per cent on Thursday after 3,335 more patients recovered from the disease, a bulletin released by the state health department said.

With 55 fresh fatalities, the coronavirus death toll in the state also climbed to 3,394, it said.

West Bengal reported 2,984 new cases, pushing the tally to 1,71,681, the bulletin said, adding, the number of active cases stood at 24,039.

Since Wednesday, 45,291 samples have been tested in the state.

Haryana records highest single-day jump in COVID-19 deaths, new cases

Haryana on Thursday reported its highest single-day spike in COVID-19 deaths with 19 new fatalities, while the total number of infections also rose by a record 1,881, officials said.

The rise on Thursday pushed the cumulative figures to 740 deaths and 70,099 cases, according to the state health department's daily bulletin.

COVID-19: Maha adds record 18,105 cases; recoveries top 6 lakh

Maharashtra reported 18,105 new COVID-19 cases, highest single-day count so far, taking its tally to 8,43,844 on Thursday, a health department official said.

The state also reported 391 deaths, taking the fatality count to 25,586, he said.

Maharashtra had on Wednesday (September 2) reported 17,433 new COVID-19 cases, the previous highest one-day count.

Also, 13,988 people were discharged from hospitals, taking the number of recovered cases beyond the 6 lakh-mark to 6,12,484, the official said.

The state currently has 2,05,428 active cases.

Mumbai city reported 1,526 new cases and 37 deaths, taking its tally to 1,50,095 and the toll to 7,764.

The number of active cases in Mumbai stood at 21,439, he added.

Pune city reported 1,873 cases along with 47 fresh deaths, taking its infection count to 1,06,428 and the toll to 2,654, the official said.

Maharashtra's COVID-19 figures are as follows: Positive cases 8,43,844, new cases 18,105, deaths 25,586, recoveries 6,12,484, active cases 2,05,428, people tested so far 43,72,697.

109 fresh cases take Meghalaya's COVID-19 tally to 2,626

As many as 109 more people tested positive for COVID-19 in Meghalaya on Thursday, taking the state's coronavirus tally to 2,626, Health Services director Aman War said.

Of the new cases, 78 were reported from East Khasi Hills, 13 from Ri Bhoi, 15 from West Garo Hills, two from South Garo Hills and one from West Jaintia Hills, War said.

Seventy-five people were cured of the disease during the day taking the total number of recoveries in the state to 1,393.

At present, the state has 1,220 active COVID-19 cases, he said.

Thirteen patients have died so far in the state, War said.

East Khasi Hills district, of which state capital Shillong is a part, has the highest number of active COVID-19 cases at 833, followed by West Garo Hills district at 121 and Ri Bhoi district at 84, the official said.

Over 94,000 samples have been tested for COVID-19 in the northeastern state till date, War said.

Goa records highest single-day spike of 713 new COVID-19 cases

With the detection of 713 new COVID-19 cases, Goa on Thursday recorded the highest single-day spike in infections for the second consecutive day, an official said.

As many as 302 patients were discharged from treatment facilities that took the number of recoveries in the coastal state to 14,361, the official said.

Of the 2,651 samples tested during the day, results of 713 suspects came out positive for the deadly virus, taking the tally in the state to 19,355, he said.

Moreover, eight people died of the infection on Thursday, raising the toll to 212, the official added.

Goa's COVID-19 figures are as follows: Positive cases 19,355, new cases 713, deaths 212, discharged 14,361, active cases 4,782, samples tested till date 2,06,760.

U'khand records highest single day spike in COVID-19 cases

Uttarakhand on Thursday recorded its highest single-day spike in COVID-19 cases with 946 people testing positive for the infection, according to a state health department bulletin.

The fresh cases have pushed the state's infection tally to 22,180. Nine people, who were COVID-19 positive, died and the death toll now stands at 300, it said. 

Five deaths were reported from AIIMS, Rishikesh, three from Haldwani's Sushila Tiwari Government Hospital and one from Base Hospital Kotdwar, the bulletin said.

Dehradun district reported the highest number of 272 cases, Udham Singh Nagar 194, Haridwar 135, Nainital 105, Uttarkashi 50, Almora 48, Tehri 37, Pauri 31, Pithoragarh 28, Rudraprayag 24, Champawat 20, and Chamoli and Bageshwar on each, it said.

The bulletin said that 14,945 COVID patients have recovered in the state, 64 have migrated out of the state and 300 have died.

There are 6,871 active cases in the state.

J-K records more than 1,000 COVID-19 cases in a day for first time, infection tally now 39,943

Jammu and Kashmir recorded its highest single-day spike of 1,079 coronavirus cases on Thursday taking the infection tally to 39,943, while the death toll due to the disease rose to 743 with 11 fatalities, officials said.

"There were 1,079 new cases of coronavirus in the past 24 hours. This is for the first time that the number of fresh cases has crossed 1,000 in a 24-hour period," an official said.

Among the new cases, 622 were from the Jammu region and 457 from the Kashmir valley.

This is also for the first time that the number or positive cases in Jammu region was higher than the valley.

Jammu district reported the highest number of 484 new cases, followed by 139 in Srinagar district, the officials said.

Jammu district has become the first district in the union territory to have more than 400 positive cases in a single day.

There are 8,441 active cases of the coronavirus disease, while 30,759 patients have recovered so far, they said.

Meanwhile, 11 persons infected with the novel coronavirus have died in Jammu and Kashmir in the 24-hour period till 5 pm on Thursday, the officials said.

They said while three of these deaths took place in Jammu, eight were reported from the Kashmir valley. This has taken the death toll in the union territory to 743.

COVID-19: Toll crosses 6,000-mark in Karnataka, 8,865 new cases

The COVID-19 toll in Karnataka breached 6,000 mark on Thursday, as the state reported 8,865 fresh cases and 104 related fatalities, taking the total number of infections to 3.70 lakh, the health department said. The day also saw 7,122 patients getting discharged after recovery.

Out of 8,865 fresh cases reported on Thursday, 3,189 cases were from Bengaluru urban alone.

As of September 3 evening, cumulatively 3.70 lakh coronavirus cases have been confirmed in the state, which includes 6,054 deaths and 2.68 lakh discharges, the health department said in its bulletin.

It said, out of 96,098 active cases, 95,363 patients are in isolation at designated hospitals and are stable, while 735 are in ICU.

COVID-19: Gujarat adds record 1,325 cases, tops 1 lakh-mark

Gujarat registered 1,325 new COVID-19 cases, highest single-day count so far, taking its tally beyond the one lakh-mark on Thursday, the state health department said.

With the highest one-day increase of 1,325 cases, Gujarat's tally rose to 1,00,375, said a release by the health department.

Sixteen persons with the COVID-19 infection also died across the state, taking the toll to 3,064, it said.

The release said as many as 1,126 more persons were discharged from hospitals in the last 24 hours, taking the number of recovered cases to 81,180.

Gujarat COVID-19 figures are as follows: Positive cases 1,00,375, new cases 1,325, deaths 3,064, discharged 81,180, active cases 16,131, people tested so far 25,59,916.

Kerala records 1553 new COVID-19 cases, situation 'not good,' cases may go up:CM

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said on Thursday the situation in the state was "not good", as 1,553 new COVID-19 cases and 10 fatalities were reported taking the infection count to 79,624 and death toll to 315.

The number of active cases is 21,516.

"The situation in the state is not good. There is a slip in the number of people getting infected with the virus in the last two days. It is due to the less number of tests carried out during the Onam festival holidays," he told reporters.

TN's RT-PCR tests for COVID-19 crosses 50 lakh

Tamil Nadu achieved a milestone in testing for coronavirus with the overall samples examined so far crossing the 50 lakh mark while 5,892 fresh cases took the infection count to 4,45,851 on Thursday.

The day also saw 92 more fatalities pushing the death toll to 7,608, the Health department said.

The active cases in the state stood at 52,070.

The number of recoveries continued to outnumber fresh infections with 6,110 people walking out of various hospitals on Thursday, taking the total number of those cured of the disease to 3,86,173.

The fresh cases in the state capital slipped below the four digit mark to 968 after several days as the total count rose to 1,38,724, the bulletin said.

COVID-19: Delhi records highest spike in cases in 67 days; death count 4,500

Delhi recorded 2,737 new COVID-19 cases on Thursday, the city's highest single-day spike in 67 days, taking the infection tally to over 1.82 lakh, while the death toll mounted to 4,500, authorities said.

This is the third successive day in September in which over 2,000 new cases have been reported.

According to the latest bulletin issued by the Delhi health department, 19 more fatalities have been reported in the city.

On Wednesday, 19 deaths were reported and the daily cases count was at 2,509. On September 1, the fresh cases count stood at 2,312.

The number of active cases currently stands at 17,692. It was 16,502 on Wednesday.

On June 23, the national capital had reported its highest single-day spike so far of 3,947 new cases.

The death toll from COVID-19 stood at 4,481 on Wednesday.

Thursday's bulletin said the death toll from the coronavirus infection has risen to 4,500 and the total number of cases to 1,82,306.

Single person driving a car or doing exercise does not have to wear face mask: Health Ministry

A Single person driving a car or a person doing exercise/cycling alone does not have to wear a face mask. However, if there is more than one person in a car and group of people are exercising then wearing a mask is a must to avoid the spread of COVID-19, the Union Health Ministry said on Thursday.

There are no guidelines from the Union Health Ministry on wearing a face mask when a person is driving a car alone or a person is doing an out-door exercising/cycling alone. AP reports 10k plus fresh COVID-19 cases, 75 deaths

As many as 62,225 samples tested returned 10,199 coronavirus positive cases in Andhra Pradesh as the aggregate shot up to 4,65,730 on Thursday.

The latest government bulletin said 9,499 COVID-19 patients got cured and were discharged from hospitals while another 75 died in the 24 hours ending 9 AM.

The total COVID-19 deaths in the state now stood at 4,200.

This is the ninth day in a row the state has reported fresh cases in excess of 10,000.

While East Godavari continued to add more than 1,000 daily cases, SPS Nellore and Prakasam the latest danger zones reported over 900 each.

Five districts registered fresh cases in excess of 800 each.

After a total of 3,57,829 infected got cured, the state now has 1,03,701 active cases.

The overall infection positivity rate inched closer to the 12 per cent mark, touching 11.92 per cent on Thursday.

Maha, AP, Karnataka, Delhi and TN account for 70 pc of total COVID-19 deaths: Health Ministry

Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Delhi and Tamil Nadu account for 70 per cent of the total COVID-19 deaths in the country, the Health Ministry said on Thursday.

The ministry further said that the five states of Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu account for 62 per cent of the active cases in the country.

Addressing a press conference, Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan said if deaths are tracked in these states and UTs across weeks then a different picture emerges.

"If we track deaths in these five states across weeks, then out of 5 only 2 states i.e Karnataka and Delhi have shown an increase in Case Fatality Trajectory. However, in Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu there is decrease in daily deaths," he said.

"On a week to week basis, there has been 4.5 per cent decrease in average daily deaths reported in Andhra Pradesh, 11.5 per cent decline in Maharashtra and 18.2 per cent decline in Tamil Nadu. On the other hand, Delhi has seen 50 per cent and Karnataka has seen 9.6 per cent increase in average daily fatalities," he said.

Bhushan said states and UTs where COVID positivity rate among healthcare workers is on the higher side are Telangana (18 per cent), Maharashtra (16 per cent), Delhi (14 per cent), Karnataka (13 per cent), Puducherry (12 per cent) and Punjab (11 per cent).

Himachal minister tests COVID-19 positive

Himachal Jal Shakti Minister Mahender Singh Thakur said he has tested positive for COVID-19 on Thursday, four days ahead of the monsoon session of the assembly.

Singh, 70, in a Facebook post, urged people who came in his contact recently to quarantine themselves and get tested for the dreaded disease.

The legislator from Mandi's Dharampur assembly segment said he had got himself tested after observing primary symptoms. The seven-time MLA expressed hope that he would be cured soon.  

The Himachal Pradesh Assembly will have a 12-day session from September 7.

Uttar Pradesh reports 75 more COVID-19 deaths

The coronavirus death toll in Uttar Pradesh rose to 3,691 on Thursday with 75 more fatalities, while the state's infection tally reached 2,47,101, officials said here.

There are 57,598 active cases in the state, while 1,85,812 patients have been discharged after recovering from the infection, Additional Chief Secretary, Medical and Health, Amit Mohan Prasad told reporters.

The caseload on Wednesday stood at 2,41,439. With fresh cases, the COVID-19 tally in the state has risen to 2,47,101.

As many as 1,36,803 COVID-19 tests were conducted in UP on Wednesday, taking the total number of tests done in the state to over 60 lakh, Prasad said.

Of the 57,598 active cases, 29,588 are in home isolation, he added.

Biggest one-day spike of 590 COVID-19 cases in Tripura pushes

Tripura registered its highest single-day spike of 590 COVID-19 cases on Thursday, which pushed the tally in the northeastern state to 13,312, a health department official said.

The death toll rose to 126 after eight more people succumbed to the infection, he said.

West Tripura district accounted for 69 of the 126 COVID-19 deaths, the official said.

The state currently has 5,193 active cases, while 8,033 people have recovered from the disease. Twenty patients have migrated to other states, he said.

As many as 2,82801 samples have been tested for COVID-19 so far, the official added.

Another Odisha Minister tests positive for Covid-19

Odisha Handloom and Textile Minister Padmini Dian has tested positive for Covid-19.

The Minister on Thursday confirmed that she has tested positive for the virus and was undergoing home isolation.

She also requested all who have recently come in contact with her to get themselves tested for Covid-19.

Dian is the third Minister in the state to have contracted the disease.

Earlier, Labour Minister Susant Singh and Higher Education Minister Arun Kumar Sahoo were infected with the virus.

Notably, more than a dozen lawmakers in the state have tested Covid-19 positive.

Himachal Pradesh COVID-19 tally reaches 6,482

The total number of COVID-19 cases in Himachal Pradesh have reached 6,482, informed the state's health department on Thursday.

Out of the total number, 1,649 are active cases, 4,742 patients have recovered and 44 people have succumbed to the virus.

The COVID-19 tally of Andaman and Nicobar Islands rose to 3,186 on Thursday as 26 more people tested positive for the infection, while one fresh fatality pushed the Union territory's coronavirus death toll to 47, a health official said.

Four new patients have travel history, while 22 infections were detected during contact tracing, he said.

Forty-four more people were cured of the disease, taking the total number of recoveries in the archipelago to 2,758, the official added.

Four more legislators in Punjab tests positive

Four more legislators in Punjab tested coronavirus positive, taking their total number to 33 of 117.

"Four of our MLAs, Randeep Nabha, Angad Singh, Aman Arora and Parminder Dhindsa, have tested Covid-19 positive," Chief Minister Amarinder Singh informed in a tweet on Thursday.

"Wish them all a speedy recovery. Fight against Covid-19 is real and the onus is on all of us to observe full precautions, to test, and if found positive, to start treatment quickly," he added.

Jharkhand reports 1,029 new cases, 10 fresh fatalities

Jharkhand's COVID-19 caseload rose to 44,862 on Thursday as 1,029 more people tested positive for the infection, while 10 fresh fatalities pushed the state's coronavirus death toll to 438, a health official said.

The fresh infections have taken the number of active cases in the state to 14,677, while 29,747 people have recovered from the disease so far, he said.

The state has tested 20,846 samples for COVID-19 in the last 24 hours, the official added.

COVID-19: Younger brother of veteran actor Dilip Kumar passes away at 90

Ehsan Khan, the younger brother of veteran actor Dilip Kumar, passed away on Wednesday at the Lilavati Hospital.

The demise took place at 11 pm, the hospital said.

Ehsan, 90 years old, had tested positive for COVID-19 and also had heart disease, hypertension, and Alzheimer's, according to the Lilavati Hospital.

On August 21, the thespian's youngest brother Aslam Khan passed away at Lilavati Hospital.

New Delhi: India reported the highest single-day spike of 83,883 new coronavirus cases, taking the national caseload past 38-lakh mark, according to the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare's data released on Thursday.

The cumulative death toll reached 67,376 after 1,043 new deaths were reported in the country in the last 24 hours.

The coronavirus cases in the country stands at 38,53,407 including 8,15,538 active cases and 29,70,493 cured/discharged/migrated.

Maharashtra reported 2,02,048 active coronavirus cases, the highest in the country.

A total of 11,72,179 samples were collected for COVID-19 testing on Wednesday, taking the total number of samples tested for coronavirus in the country to over 4.55 crores, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) informed.

"India witnesses an unprecedented surge in testing. Over 11,70,000 tests done in the last 24 hours. High levels of testing sustained over a period of time in widespread areas enable to diagnose cases early and facilitate seamless isolation and hospitalisation. This eventually leads to a low mortality rate," the Health Ministry said in a tweet.

Meanwhile, India's Case Fatality Rate (CFR) stands at 1.76 per cent, one of the lowest globally while global CFR stands at 3.3 per cent. India is reporting 48 deaths/million population, also one of the lowest in the world while the global average is 110 deaths/million population, according to the Ministry of Health. (ANI)

With 55 fresh fatalities, the coronavirus death toll in the state also climbed to 3,394, it said.

West Bengal reported 2,984 new cases, pushing the tally to 1,71,681, the bulletin said, adding, the number of active cases stood at 24,039.

Haryana records highest single-day jump in COVID-19 deaths, new cases

Haryana on Thursday reported its highest single-day spike in COVID-19 deaths with 19 new fatalities, while the total number of infections also rose by a record 1,881, officials said.

The rise on Thursday pushed the cumulative figures to 740 deaths and 70,099 cases, according to the state health department's daily bulletin.

COVID-19: Maha adds record 18,105 cases; recoveries top 6 lakh

Maharashtra reported 18,105 new COVID-19 cases, highest single-day count so far, taking its tally to 8,43,844 on Thursday, a health department official said.

The state also reported 391 deaths, taking the fatality count to 25,586, he said.

Maharashtra had on Wednesday (September 2) reported 17,433 new COVID-19 cases, the previous highest one-day count.

Also, 13,988 people were discharged from hospitals, taking the number of recovered cases beyond the 6 lakh-mark to 6,12,484, the official said.

The state currently has 2,05,428 active cases.

Mumbai city reported 1,526 new cases and 37 deaths, taking its tally to 1,50,095 and the toll to 7,764.

The number of active cases in Mumbai stood at 21,439, he added.

Pune city reported 1,873 cases along with 47 fresh deaths, taking its infection count to 1,06,428 and the toll to 2,654, the official said.

109 fresh cases take Meghalaya's COVID-19 tally to 2,626

As many as 109 more people tested positive for COVID-19 in Meghalaya on Thursday, taking the state's coronavirus tally to 2,626, Health Services director Aman War said.

Of the new cases, 78 were reported from East Khasi Hills, 13 from Ri Bhoi, 15 from West Garo Hills, two from South Garo Hills and one from West Jaintia Hills, War said.

Seventy-five people were cured of the disease during the day taking the total number of recoveries in the state to 1,393.

At present, the state has 1,220 active COVID-19 cases, he said.

Thirteen patients have died so far in the state, War said.

East Khasi Hills district, of which state capital Shillong is a part, has the highest number of active COVID-19 cases at 833, followed by West Garo Hills district at 121 and Ri Bhoi district at 84, the official said.

Over 94,000 samples have been tested for COVID-19 in the northeastern state till date, War said.

Goa records highest single-day spike of 713 new COVID-19 cases

With the detection of 713 new COVID-19 cases, Goa on Thursday recorded the highest single-day spike in infections for the second consecutive day, an official said.

As many as 302 patients were discharged from treatment facilities that took the number of recoveries in the coastal state to 14,361, the official said.

Of the 2,651 samples tested during the day, results of 713 suspects came out positive for the deadly virus, taking the tally in the state to 19,355, he said.

Moreover, eight people died of the infection on Thursday, raising the toll to 212, the official added.

U'khand records highest single day spike in COVID-19 cases

Uttarakhand on Thursday recorded its highest single-day spike in COVID-19 cases with 946 people testing positive for the infection, according to a state health department bulletin.

The fresh cases have pushed the state's infection tally to 22,180. Nine people, who were COVID-19 positive, died and the death toll now stands at 300, it said. 

Five deaths were reported from AIIMS, Rishikesh, three from Haldwani's Sushila Tiwari Government Hospital and one from Base Hospital Kotdwar, the bulletin said.

Dehradun district reported the highest number of 272 cases, Udham Singh Nagar 194, Haridwar 135, Nainital 105, Uttarkashi 50, Almora 48, Tehri 37, Pauri 31, Pithoragarh 28, Rudraprayag 24, Champawat 20, and Chamoli and Bageshwar on each, it said.

The bulletin said that 14,945 COVID patients have recovered in the state, 64 have migrated out of the state and 300 have died.

There are 6,871 active cases in the state.

J-K records more than 1,000 COVID-19 cases in a day for first time, infection tally now 39,943

Jammu and Kashmir recorded its highest single-day spike of 1,079 coronavirus cases on Thursday taking the infection tally to 39,943, while the death toll due to the disease rose to 743 with 11 fatalities, officials said.

"There were 1,079 new cases of coronavirus in the past 24 hours. This is for the first time that the number of fresh cases has crossed 1,000 in a 24-hour period," an official said.

Among the new cases, 622 were from the Jammu region and 457 from the Kashmir valley.

This is also for the first time that the number or positive cases in Jammu region was higher than the valley.

Jammu district reported the highest number of 484 new cases, followed by 139 in Srinagar district, the officials said.

Jammu district has become the first district in the union territory to have more than 400 positive cases in a single day.

There are 8,441 active cases of the coronavirus disease, while 30,759 patients have recovered so far, they said.

Meanwhile, 11 persons infected with the novel coronavirus have died in Jammu and Kashmir in the 24-hour period till 5 pm on Thursday, the officials said.

They said while three of these deaths took place in Jammu, eight were reported from the Kashmir valley. This has taken the death toll in the union territory to 743.

COVID-19: Toll crosses 6,000-mark in Karnataka, 8,865 new cases

The COVID-19 toll in Karnataka breached 6,000 mark on Thursday, as the state reported 8,865 fresh cases and 104 related fatalities, taking the total number of infections to 3.70 lakh, the health department said. The day also saw 7,122 patients getting discharged after recovery.

Out of 8,865 fresh cases reported on Thursday, 3,189 cases were from Bengaluru urban alone.

As of September 3 evening, cumulatively 3.70 lakh coronavirus cases have been confirmed in the state, which includes 6,054 deaths and 2.68 lakh discharges, the health department said in its bulletin.

It said, out of 96,098 active cases, 95,363 patients are in isolation at designated hospitals and are stable, while 735 are in ICU.

COVID-19: Gujarat adds record 1,325 cases, tops 1 lakh-mark

Gujarat registered 1,325 new COVID-19 cases, highest single-day count so far, taking its tally beyond the one lakh-mark on Thursday, the state health department said.

With the highest one-day increase of 1,325 cases, Gujarat's tally rose to 1,00,375, said a release by the health department.

Sixteen persons with the COVID-19 infection also died across the state, taking the toll to 3,064, it said.

The release said as many as 1,126 more persons were discharged from hospitals in the last 24 hours, taking the number of recovered cases to 81,180.

Gujarat COVID-19 figures are as follows: Positive cases 1,00,375, new cases 1,325, deaths 3,064, discharged 81,180, active cases 16,131, people tested so far 25,59,916.

Kerala records 1553 new COVID-19 cases, situation 'not good,' cases may go up:CM

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said on Thursday the situation in the state was "not good", as 1,553 new COVID-19 cases and 10 fatalities were reported taking the infection count to 79,624 and death toll to 315.

The number of active cases is 21,516.

"The situation in the state is not good. There is a slip in the number of people getting infected with the virus in the last two days. It is due to the less number of tests carried out during the Onam festival holidays," he told reporters.

TN's RT-PCR tests for COVID-19 crosses 50 lakh

Tamil Nadu achieved a milestone in testing for coronavirus with the overall samples examined so far crossing the 50 lakh mark while 5,892 fresh cases took the infection count to 4,45,851 on Thursday.

The day also saw 92 more fatalities pushing the death toll to 7,608, the Health department said.

The active cases in the state stood at 52,070.

The number of recoveries continued to outnumber fresh infections with 6,110 people walking out of various hospitals on Thursday, taking the total number of those cured of the disease to 3,86,173.

The fresh cases in the state capital slipped below the four digit mark to 968 after several days as the total count rose to 1,38,724, the bulletin said.

COVID-19: Delhi records highest spike in cases in 67 days; death count 4,500

Delhi recorded 2,737 new COVID-19 cases on Thursday, the city's highest single-day spike in 67 days, taking the infection tally to over 1.82 lakh, while the death toll mounted to 4,500, authorities said.

This is the third successive day in September in which over 2,000 new cases have been reported.

According to the latest bulletin issued by the Delhi health department, 19 more fatalities have been reported in the city.

On Wednesday, 19 deaths were reported and the daily cases count was at 2,509. On September 1, the fresh cases count stood at 2,312.

The number of active cases currently stands at 17,692. It was 16,502 on Wednesday.

On June 23, the national capital had reported its highest single-day spike so far of 3,947 new cases.

The death toll from COVID-19 stood at 4,481 on Wednesday.

Thursday's bulletin said the death toll from the coronavirus infection has risen to 4,500 and the total number of cases to 1,82,306.

AP reports 10k plus fresh COVID-19 cases, 75 deaths

As many as 62,225 samples tested returned 10,199 coronavirus positive cases in Andhra Pradesh as the aggregate shot up to 4,65,730 on Thursday.

The latest government bulletin said 9,499 COVID-19 patients got cured and were discharged from hospitals while another 75 died in the 24 hours ending 9 AM.

The total COVID-19 deaths in the state now stood at 4,200.

This is the ninth day in a row the state has reported fresh cases in excess of 10,000.

While East Godavari continued to add more than 1,000 daily cases, SPS Nellore and Prakasam the latest danger zones reported over 900 each.

Five districts registered fresh cases in excess of 800 each.

After a total of 3,57,829 infected got cured, the state now has 1,03,701 active cases.

The overall infection positivity rate inched closer to the 12 per cent mark, touching 11.92 per cent on Thursday.

Maha, AP, Karnataka, Delhi and TN account for 70 pc of total COVID-19 deaths: Health Ministry

Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Delhi and Tamil Nadu account for 70 per cent of the total COVID-19 deaths in the country, the Health Ministry said on Thursday.

The ministry further said that the five states of Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu account for 62 per cent of the active cases in the country.

Addressing a press conference, Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan said if deaths are tracked in these states and UTs across weeks then a different picture emerges.

"If we track deaths in these five states across weeks, then out of 5 only 2 states i.e Karnataka and Delhi have shown an increase in Case Fatality Trajectory. However, in Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu there is decrease in daily deaths," he said.

"On a week to week basis, there has been 4.5 per cent decrease in average daily deaths reported in Andhra Pradesh, 11.5 per cent decline in Maharashtra and 18.2 per cent decline in Tamil Nadu. On the other hand, Delhi has seen 50 per cent and Karnataka has seen 9.6 per cent increase in average daily fatalities," he said.

Bhushan said states and UTs where COVID positivity rate among healthcare workers is on the higher side are Telangana (18 per cent), Maharashtra (16 per cent), Delhi (14 per cent), Karnataka (13 per cent), Puducherry (12 per cent) and Punjab (11 per cent).

Himachal minister tests COVID-19 positive

Himachal Jal Shakti Minister Mahender Singh Thakur said he has tested positive for COVID-19 on Thursday, four days ahead of the monsoon session of the assembly.

Singh, 70, in a Facebook post, urged people who came in his contact recently to quarantine themselves and get tested for the dreaded disease.

The legislator from Mandi's Dharampur assembly segment said he had got himself tested after observing primary symptoms. The seven-time MLA expressed hope that he would be cured soon.  

The Himachal Pradesh Assembly will have a 12-day session from September 7.

Uttar Pradesh reports 75 more COVID-19 deaths

The coronavirus death toll in Uttar Pradesh rose to 3,691 on Thursday with 75 more fatalities, while the state's infection tally reached 2,47,101, officials said here.

There are 57,598 active cases in the state, while 1,85,812 patients have been discharged after recovering from the infection, Additional Chief Secretary, Medical and Health, Amit Mohan Prasad told reporters.

The caseload on Wednesday stood at 2,41,439. With fresh cases, the COVID-19 tally in the state has risen to 2,47,101.

As many as 1,36,803 COVID-19 tests were conducted in UP on Wednesday, taking the total number of tests done in the state to over 60 lakh, Prasad said.

Of the 57,598 active cases, 29,588 are in home isolation, he added.

Biggest one-day spike of 590 COVID-19 cases in Tripura pushes

Tripura registered its highest single-day spike of 590 COVID-19 cases on Thursday, which pushed the tally in the northeastern state to 13,312, a health department official said.

The death toll rose to 126 after eight more people succumbed to the infection, he said.

West Tripura district accounted for 69 of the 126 COVID-19 deaths, the official said.

The state currently has 5,193 active cases, while 8,033 people have recovered from the disease. Twenty patients have migrated to other states, he said.

As many as 2,82801 samples have been tested for COVID-19 so far, the official added.

Another Odisha Minister tests positive for Covid-19

Odisha Handloom and Textile Minister Padmini Dian has tested positive for Covid-19.

The Minister on Thursday confirmed that she has tested positive for the virus and was undergoing home isolation.

She also requested all who have recently come in contact with her to get themselves tested for Covid-19.

Dian is the third Minister in the state to have contracted the disease.

Earlier, Labour Minister Susant Singh and Higher Education Minister Arun Kumar Sahoo were infected with the virus.

Notably, more than a dozen lawmakers in the state have tested Covid-19 positive.

The total number of COVID-19 cases in Himachal Pradesh have reached 6,482, informed the state's health department on Thursday.

Out of the total number, 1,649 are active cases, 4,742 patients have recovered and 44 people have succumbed to the virus.

Jharkhand reports 1,029 new cases, 10 fresh fatalities

Jharkhand's COVID-19 caseload rose to 44,862 on Thursday as 1,029 more people tested positive for the infection, while 10 fresh fatalities pushed the state's coronavirus death toll to 438, a health official said.

The fresh infections have taken the number of active cases in the state to 14,677, while 29,747 people have recovered from the disease so far, he said.

COVID-19: Younger brother of veteran actor Dilip Kumar passes away at 90

Ehsan Khan, the younger brother of veteran actor Dilip Kumar, passed away on Wednesday at the Lilavati Hospital.

The demise took place at 11 pm, the hospital said.

Ehsan, 90 years old, had tested positive for COVID-19 and also had heart disease, hypertension, and Alzheimer's, according to the Lilavati Hospital.

On August 21, the thespian's youngest brother Aslam Khan passed away at Lilavati Hospital.

New Delhi: India reported the highest single-day spike of 83,883 new coronavirus cases, taking the national caseload past 38-lakh mark, according to the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare's data released on Thursday.

The cumulative death toll reached 67,376 after 1,043 new deaths were reported in the country in the last 24 hours.

The coronavirus cases in the country stands at 38,53,407 including 8,15,538 active cases and 29,70,493 cured/discharged/migrated.

Maharashtra reported 2,02,048 active coronavirus cases, the highest in the country.

A total of 11,72,179 samples were collected for COVID-19 testing on Wednesday, taking the total number of samples tested for coronavirus in the country to over 4.55 crores, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) informed.

"India witnesses an unprecedented surge in testing. Over 11,70,000 tests done in the last 24 hours. High levels of testing sustained over a period of time in widespread areas enable to diagnose cases early and facilitate seamless isolation and hospitalisation. This eventually leads to a low mortality rate," the Health Ministry said in a tweet.

Meanwhile, India's Case Fatality Rate (CFR) stands at 1.76 per cent, one of the lowest globally while global CFR stands at 3.3 per cent. India is reporting 48 deaths/million population, also one of the lowest in the world while the global average is 110 deaths/million population, according to the Ministry of Health. (ANI)
