India sees 675 deaths in just one hour

While India is putting in all efforts to prepare a vaccine for the cure of the deadly coronavirus, the world's third worst-hit country on Sunday recorded close to 49,000 (48,661) cases in the last 24 hours taking the total tally to over 13.8 lakh cases while the death toll crossed 32,000 (32,063) with 675 deaths in just one hour.

According to the latest data available on the website of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, total number of cases in India reached 13,85,522 of which 32,063 people have lost their lives while 8,85,577 have recovered.

The total number of active cases are 4,67,882 cases. Maharashtra remained the worst hit state after recording a single-day spike of 9,251 cases taking the state's tally to 3,66,368 of which 13,389 people have died of the deadly disease. (IANS reports)

COVID spread in UP jails, 228 test positive in Ballia

Coronavirus is now rapidly spreading in the jails of Uttar Pradesh. A day after 128 inmates in Jhansi jail tested positive for Covid-19, as many as 228 inmates in Ballia district jail have been found to be infected with the deadly virus.

Jail superintendent Prashant Kumar Maurya said, "The infected prisoners have been accommodated in separate barracks in the jail. They are being given medication and food as per the instruction of the health department."

The lone woman inmate who has also tested positive, has been admitted to the L-1 hospital at Basantpur, the jail official added.

The jail administration said that during an antigen test of 817 inmates, 228 tested positive for the virus including one staff member.

There are 1,049 inmates in Ballia prison. With Ballia's tally, the total number of prisoners infected in the state has reached 486. Besides, 25 jail staff, too, have tested positive.

All the prisoners were tested through rapid antigen kits and samples of those tested positive have also been sent for confirmatory RT-PCR test.

UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had earlier instructed all the districts to set up temporary jails. A communique was also issued by the home department in connection with the same.

However, Ballia district magistrate Shrihari Pratap Shahi, admitted that there was no facility of temporary jail in the district. "We had set up such jails only for 'Tablighi Jamaatis'," he added.

Shahi further said that large-scale sampling was done in the jail after which 16 inmates tested positive for the virus on July 22.

"Following that, we organised a larger camp of 20 medical teams and got a maximum number of inmates tested," he said.

He also said that several measures have been taken to limit the spread of the virus.

"Of the total eight barracks, three barracks have been turned into isolation wards, for those coming from outside. A team of the health department has been asked to deploy its unit inside the prison," he said.

Odisha COVID death toll at 140

Odisha has reported 10 more Covid-19 deaths in last 24 hours, taking the number of fatalities in the state to 140, said the health department on Sunday.

Six death cases were reported from Ganjam district, two from Khurda district and one each from Gajapati and Sundergarh districts.

The positive tally rose to 25,389 in the state with the detection of 1,376 fresh cases in last 24 hours.

Of the new cases, 917 were detected in quarantine while 459 were local contact cases.

Ganjam district reported the highest number of 484 positive cases followed by Khurda (187), Keonjhar (103), Cuttack (75), and Gajapati (74).

The number of active cases in the state is at 9,287 while 15,928 persons have recovered so far.

2,891 new coronavirus cases found in Pune district

Pune district reported 2,891 new coronavirus cases since previous evening, taking its case tally to 66,965, a health official said on Saturday.

The death toll in the district due to the pandemic reached 1,672 with 47 patients succumbing to the infection, he said.

"Of the 2,891 new cases, 1,479 are from the Pune Municipal Corporation limits, which has reported 43,083 patients so far," the offiicial said.

693 patients were also discharged from city hospitals upon recovery, he said.

1,041 new cases were reported from neighbouring Pimpri Chinchwad industrial belt where the COVID-19 case count now stands at 15,997.

    As on 25th July, the State have reported 4 deaths.

    However, investigation is on and subject to further verification to establish the link with COVID-19 as comorbid conditions were present.

4 more COVID-19 patients die in Nagaland
A day after Nagaland recorded its first death due to COVID-19, three more people infected with the disease died, while the state's tally rose to 1,289 after 50 fresh cases were reported on Saturday, officials said.

All the four deaths occurred in Dimapur district.

The state registered its first COVID-19 fatality when the test result of a 50-year-old man came out positive on Friday, three days after his death, State Nodal Officer for Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme, Dr Nyan Kikon, had said.

Four more COVID-19 patients succumbed since Friday and authorities were ascertaining whether they died of the infection as they had comorbidities, Health and Family Welfare Minister S Pangnyu Phom said.

The minister also tweeted, "Fifty new cases of COVID-19 have been detected out of 344 test results received on Saturday - 20 in Mon, 19 in Dimapur, 7 in Kohima and 4 in Mokokchung."

The state now has 744 active cases while 451 have recovered.

India reported a spike of 48,661 coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours, said the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Sunday.

The total COVID-19 positive cases stand at 13,85,522, including 4,67,882 active cases, 8,85,577 cured/discharged/migrated, it added.

With 705 deaths in the last 24 hours, the cumulative toll reached 32,063.

Maharashtra has reported 3,66,368 coronavirus cases, the highest among states and Union Territories in the country.

A total of 2,06,737 cases have been reported from Tamil Nadu till now, while Delhi has recorded a total of 1,29,531 coronavirus cases.

According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), 4,42,263 samples were tested for coronavirus on Saturday and overall 1,62,91,331 samples have been tested so far.

India conducts over 4.4 lakh COVID-19 tests in single day

For the first time, a total of 4,42,031 samples were tested in the country in a single day, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

The government labs set a new record of testing 3,62,153 samples while private labs also scaled a new high by testing 79,878 samples in a single day.

"In the last 24 hours, 4,42,031 samples were tested. For the first time, government labs set a new record of testing 3,62,153 samples. Private labs also scaled a new high of 79,878 samples tested in a single day," said the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

The Central government has advised all States to keep up with the strategy of aggressive testing, tracking, and treatment which may initially lead to a high number of daily positive cases but would eventually achieve a decline.  

On Saturday, the Health Ministry had said a strong factor contributing to an increasing number of tests is the persistent increase in the number of labs from merely one in January 2020 to 1,301 today, including 902 government labs and 399 private ones.

Gujarat touches another high  tally, toll rises to 2,305

Gujarat saw another 1,081 COVID cases on Saturday, the highest daily spike so far, taking its tally to 54,712, while the toll rose to 2,305 with 22 more deaths.

Gujarat has recorded 22,069 cases in July so far, with a daily average of over 880 cases, though in this week, the number of cases has been in four figures.

With 276, Surat, the new corona hotspot, accounted for over one-fourth of the new cases, while Ahmedabad reported 180 cases and Vadodara was at the third spot with 94.

Rajkot reported 65 more cases, Bhavnagar 41, Junagadh 37, Banaskantha 34, Gandhinagar and Surendranagar 29 each, Mehsana 25, Jamnagar and Gir-Somnath 23 each, Patan 21, Kutch and Valsad 19 each, Panchmahals 18, Narmada and Navsari 12 each, Kheda 11, Anand, Mahisagar, Morbi and Sabarkantha 10 each, Tapi six, Amreli, Aravalli, Botad, Devbhumi Dwarka and Porbandar three each and Chhota Udepur two.

Of Saturday's 22 deaths, Surat accounted for exactly half, while three died in Ahmedabad, two in Vadodara and one each in Bhavnagar, Gandhinagar, Junagadh, Kutch and Rajkot.

Ahmedabad leads with 1,577 deaths, while 350 have died in Surat, 69 in Vadodara, 39 in Gandhinagar, 24 in Aravalli, 23 in Patan, 20 in Bhavnagar, 19 in Rajkot, 16 each in Mehsana, Panchmahals and Banaskantha, 14 in Kheda, 13 in Anand and 11 in Bharuch.

Health authorities have, so far, conducted 6,20,662 RT-PCR tests.

Meanwhile, a total of 782 patients were discharged on Saturday, taking the number of those cured to 39,612.

The state has 12,795 active cases, out of which 87 critical patients are still on the ventilator.

There are 4,57,317 people quarantined in the state - 4,55,585 at home and 1,732 in government facilities.
