COVID-19 death toll rises to 886 in country; cases climb to 28,380: Health ministry

The number of COVID-19 cases climbed to 28,380 and the death toll due to it rose to 886 in the country on Monday, registering a record increase of 60 deaths in 24 hours, according to the Union Health Ministry.

There has been a spike of 1,463 cases since Sunday evening.

The number of active COVID-19 cases stood at 21,132, while 6,361 people have recovered, and one patient has migrated, the ministry said.

Thus, around 22.41 per cent of patients have recovered in the country so far.

The total number of cases includes 111 foreign nationals.

A total of 60 deaths were reported since Sunday evening, of which 19 fatalities were reported from Maharashtra, 18 from Gujarat, eight from Rajasthan, seven from Madhya Pradesh, two each from Karnataka, West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh, and one each from Punjab and Tamil Nadu.

Of the 886 deaths, Maharashtra tops the tally with 342 fatalities, followed by Gujarat at 151, Madhya Pradesh at 106, Delhi at 54, Rajasthan at 41, and Andhra Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh at 31 each.

The death toll reached 26 in Telangana, 24 in Tamil Nadu while West Bengal and Karnataka have reported 20 deaths each.

Punjab has registered 18 fatalities so far. The disease has claimed six lives in Jammu and Kashmir, four in Kerala while Jharkhand and Haryana have recorded three COVID-19 deaths each.

Bihar has reported two deaths, while Meghalaya, Himachal Pradesh, Odisha and Assam have reported one fatality each, according to the ministry data.

According to the Health Ministry data updated in the evening, the highest number of confirmed cases in the country are from Maharashtra at 8,068, followed by Gujarat at 3,301, Delhi at 2,918, Rajasthan at 2,185, Madhya Pradesh at 2,168, Uttar Pradesh at 1,955 and Tamil Nadu at 1,885.

The number of COVID-19 cases has gone up to 1,177 in Andhra Pradesh and 1,002 in Telangana.

The number of cases has risen to 649 in West Bengal, 523 in Jammu and Kashmir, 511 in Karnataka, 469 in Kerala, 313 in Punjab and 289 in Haryana.

Bihar has reported 277 novel coronavirus cases, while Odisha has 108 cases. Eighty-two people have been infected with the virus in Jharkhand and 51 in Uttarakhand.

Himachal Pradesh has 40 cases, Chhattisgarh has 37 and Assam has registered 36 infections each so far.

Andaman and Nicobar Islands has 33 COVID-19 cases while Chandigarh has 30 cases and Ladakh has reported 20 infections so far.

Meghalaya has reported 12 cases, Puducherry has eight cases while Goa has seven COVID-19 cases.

Manipur and Tripura have two cases each, while Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh have reported a case each.

States demand extension of lockdown post May 3

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday conducted video conference meet with several CMs in order to discuss the COVID-19 situation in the country.

The chief ministers from Meghalaya, Mizoram, Puducherry, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Odisha, Bihar, Gujarat and Haryana spoke about the further strategies to fight against deadly coronavirus which killed nearly 900 people in the country.

Meghalaya and Odisha urged to PM Narendra Modia to extend the lockdown with some additional riders. Similarly, CMs of Goa and Puducherry have also requested the PM to further extend the lockdown.

Meanwhile, the Chief Ministers also suggested that restrictions on several services across the country should be eased, in view of the falling economy of the country.

Most of the CMs said the way in which cases are increasing, there should be a cautious approach & PM should take a call on basis of observation of CMs. Most of the BJP-ruled states' CMs said that lockdown should be continued & economic activities be started slowly.

KGMU nurse tests corona positive, CCU sealed

The entire critical care unit (CCU) of King George's Medical University (KGMU) trauma centre, where 14 patients are admitted, has been sealed and the 25 staff members, including doctors, have been quarantined after a 51-year-old nurse tested positive for Coronavirus on Sunday night.

A resident of Nakkhas locality, the nurse is the fourth medical professional in the city and second from KGMU, to test Covid-19 positive.

Three other positive cases were also reported in the city on Sunday, all of them being natives of other districts. They include a 62-year-old government doctor and his 57-year-old wife from Orai (parents of a KGMU MBBS student) and 35-year-old man from Shravasti. The 35-year-old is the son of the elderly patient who died of Covid-19 during treatment at SGPGI on Sunday afternoon.

All the eight family members of the KGMU nurse and three other people with whom she was in contact have been asked to self-isolate themselves at home.

New Delhi: With 1,396 more COVID-19 cases reported in the last 24 hours, India's count of coronavirus cases has reached 27,892, said Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Monday.

Out of these, 20,835 patients are active cases and 6185 cases have been cured, discharged, or migrated. The death toll stands at 872, with as many as 48 deaths reported in the last 24 hours.

According to the ministry, Maharashtra continues to be the worst-hit State with 8,068 cases of which 1,076 patients have recovered and 342 patients have died.

Gujarat now stands in the second spot with 3,301 cases, of which 313 have recovered and 151 people have died. Meanwhile, Delhi's count stands at 2918 of which 877 patients have recovered, while 54 patients have lost their lives.

Tamil Nadu's COVID-19 figure stands at 1,885 with 1,020 patients recovered and 24 fatalities. Rajasthan has reported 2,185 cases of which 518 have recovered and 33 patients are dead.

Madhya Pradesh has reported 2,096 positive cases so far of which 302 patients have recovered and 103 patients have lost their lives due to the virus. In Uttar Pradesh, as many as 1,868 people have COVID-19, of which 289 recovered and 29 people have succumbed to it.

In Kerala, which reported the country's first COVID-19 case, 458 people have been detected positive for coronavirus.

KGMU nurse tests corona positive, CCU sealed

The entire critical care unit (CCU) of King George's Medical University (KGMU) trauma centre, where 14 patients are admitted, has been sealed and the 25 staff members, including doctors, have been quarantined after a 51-year-old nurse tested positive for Coronavirus on Sunday night.

A resident of Nakkhas locality, the nurse is the fourth medical professional in the city and second from KGMU, to test Covid-19 positive.

Three other positive cases were also reported in the city on Sunday, all of them being natives of other districts. They include a 62-year-old government doctor and his 57-year-old wife from Orai (parents of a KGMU MBBS student) and 35-year-old man from Shravasti. The 35-year-old is the son of the elderly patient who died of Covid-19 during treatment at SGPGI on Sunday afternoon.

All the eight family members of the KGMU nurse and three other people with whom she was in contact have been asked to self-isolate themselves at home.

India's COVID-19 count reaches 27,892, death toll at 872

New Delhi: With 1,396 more COVID-19 cases reported in the last 24 hours, India's count of coronavirus cases has reached 27,892, said Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Monday.

Out of these, 20,835 patients are active cases and 6185 cases have been cured, discharged, or migrated. The death toll stands at 872, with as many as 48 deaths reported in the last 24 hours.

According to the ministry, Maharashtra continues to be the worst-hit State with 8,068 cases of which 1,076 patients have recovered and 342 patients have died.

Gujarat now stands in the second spot with 3,301 cases, of which 313 have recovered and 151 people have died. Meanwhile, Delhi's count stands at 2918 of which 877 patients have recovered, while 54 patients have lost their lives.

Tamil Nadu's COVID-19 figure stands at 1,885 with 1,020 patients recovered and 24 fatalities. Rajasthan has reported 2,185 cases of which 518 have recovered and 33 patients are dead.

Madhya Pradesh has reported 2,096 positive cases so far of which 302 patients have recovered and 103 patients have lost their lives due to the virus. In Uttar Pradesh, as many as 1,868 people have COVID-19, of which 289 recovered and 29 people have succumbed to it.

In Kerala, which reported the country's first COVID-19 case, 458 people have been detected positive for coronavirus.
