New Delhi: After the Defence Minister of India, Rajnath Singh made a statement in Parliament on the current situation at Line of Actual Control amid the border tensions between India and China, Congress party made a scathing attack on Centre alleging that the party in power is making "deliberate" attempts to silence the opposition from asking questions over India-China border tension.

Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday also questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi's absence from the parliament.

Taking a jibe at PM, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi tweeted in Hindi, "It is clear from the statement of Defence Minister that PM Modi misled the country on Chinese encroachment. Our country has always been, and will remain with Indian Army. But PM Modi, when will you rebel against China? When will we you take back our land from China?"

Congress MPs also walked out of Lok Sabha and staged a protest after a discussion on India-China border issue was denied in the parliament. The opposition party alleged that Government of India is "running away" from answering tough questions.

While addressing the media, Congress Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Choudhary said, "During 1962 war, Atal Bihari Vajpayee demanded a discussion over the matter and then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru had agreed to hold a two day discussion in Parliament."

Gaurav Gogoi, Deputy leader of Congress in Lok Sabha, told reporters, "Today we have walked out to mark a protest as our leader Adhir Ranjan Choudhary wanted to send a message of solidarity to the Indian Army but we were denied discussion. Unfortunately the government feels that they are the ones who support the Indian army."

"No doubt there was an intention behind silencing the Congress Party because the Prime Minister does not want to answer tough questions. We should also remember that PM's statement only undermines strengthened Chinese position. PM's absence is a signal," Gaurav Gogoi further added.

Congress, along with other opposition parties, raised the demand of having a discussion over India-China issue during the first Business Advisory Committee (BAC) meeting of Lok Sabha, convened by Speaker Om Birla, however no time was allocated.

Adhir Ranjan Choudhary alleged, "We knew that government will hesitate in discussing China issue in parliament. It is quite disappointing to note that in spite of our persistent endeavour, we have been failed to register our views that entire Congress party is in support of our Army. Hence proved, this government is scared of answering our questions."

The Congress MP also questioned PM's absence in parliament at a time when the Center had brought in a resolution on Indo-China border issue. Congress Chief Spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala hit out at PM Modi, saying, "Where is Prime Minister of India? Why is he running away from answering the questions on his government's failure?"

Demanding a reply from Center, he further added, "There are a few simple questions which Defence Minister should reply in either yes or no- Has China made any brazen transgressions and occupied Indian land? How many sq kms of land has been occupied by China? When are you going to chase away the Chinese forces from our territory? On one hand, PM Modi showed his back and ran away, while on the other, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh used the majority in parliament to silence Congress party," Surjewala said.

Defence Minister assured the house, on Tuesday, that India is ready to deal with any situation on the border issue and it has been conveyed to China that attempt to forcibly alter LAC is not at all acceptable.

However, he also mentioned that the situation is very different this year both in terms of scale of troops involved and number of friction points. He said that China continues to be in illegal occupation of approximately 38,000 sq km in Laddakh.

  • Another question: since the Defence Minister says that both countries have now agreed in talks to respect theLAC, but separately says the two countries have differing perceptions of where LAC lies, isn‘t that a recipe for another clash? Shouldn’t we just insist on status quo ante?
