New Delhi: Criticizing the union government for its foreign policy failure, the Congress on Wednesday said that under the present regime "the nation, which would be looked at as an example by the world" earlier for its stand on the issues of international importance, has been cornered.
"We say it with concern and pain that India has been cornered," Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera said in a press conference here.
He said the US, before taking action against Iran, spoke to China, Pakistan and many other countries but it did not discuss the issue with India.
The Congress leader also denounced Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying the foreign policy of a country is not about event management.
"You managed events in the US, you also managed headlines (of newspapers and other publications) in India but it (foreign policy) could not be managed," Khera, who attacked the government on almost every front, said.
He said the economy was in bad shape and people were losing their jobs. Also, there's unrest in the country, wherein every section of the society was feeling apprehensive, threatened and concerned.
"Economy of the country has been ruined. Labourers and farmers are the worst affected," he said, adding that forget about creation of new employment opportunities, people were losing their existing jobs.
Talking about the day-long strike by the traders, the Congress leader said the Modi government was anti-traders and anti-people.
"There have been a large number of deaths due to starvation across the country. Even the Supreme Court had to ask the government as to what steps it took to implement the National Food Security Act, which was passed by the UPA government," he said.
Khera, taking a dig at Modi and Union Home Minister duo, said: "There are two persons in the government, who advice each other and one is caught lying in Parliament, the other would go to Ramlila Maidan and say he was lying".
"What advice should we give to such a government," he asked.
