New Delhi: Criticizing the union government for its foreign policy failure, the Congress on Wednesday said that under the present regime "the nation, which would be looked at as an example by the world" earlier for its stand on the issues of international importance, has been cornered.

"We say it with concern and pain that India has been cornered," Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera said in a press conference here.

Congress raps Modi govt

He said the US, before taking action against Iran, spoke to China, Pakistan and many other countries but it did not discuss the issue with India.

The Congress leader also denounced Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying the foreign policy of a country is not about event management.

"You managed events in the US, you also managed headlines (of newspapers and other publications) in India but it (foreign policy) could not be managed," Khera, who attacked the government on almost every front, said.

He said the economy was in bad shape and people were losing their jobs. Also, there's unrest in the country, wherein every section of the society was feeling apprehensive, threatened and concerned.

"Economy of the country has been ruined. Labourers and farmers are the worst affected," he said, adding that forget about creation of new employment opportunities, people were losing their existing jobs.

Talking about the day-long strike by the traders, the Congress leader said the Modi government was anti-traders and anti-people.

"There have been a large number of deaths due to starvation across the country. Even the Supreme Court had to ask the government as to what steps it took to implement the National Food Security Act, which was passed by the UPA government," he said.

Khera, taking a dig at Modi and Union Home Minister duo, said: "There are two persons in the government, who advice each other and one is caught lying in Parliament, the other would go to Ramlila Maidan and say he was lying".

"What advice should we give to such a government," he asked.

Intro:New Delhi: A nationwide strike has been called by 10 Central trade unions, on Wednesday, against the Government's policies and actions towards the workers. Extending support to the 'Bharat Bandh' protest, Congress slammed the Central Government over "anti-people, anti-traders" policies.

Body:While speaking over the matter, Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera said, "10 trade unions, involving 25 crore people, are on strike today. There is unrest in the country. Every section of the society feels disturbed and apprehensive over the unemployment rate, price rise, unfulfilled promises of the govt, whose result can be seen all over the country."

"Traders, workers and farmers are the most affected whenever the economy slows down. Government policies over the last five years show that this Government is not just anti-youth but it is also anti-famers, anti-traders," he further added.

He also slammed the Government over the rise in unemployment rate by saying, "The striking union are also seeking answers from the government as to what have they done to create new employment, even the existing jobs have been destroyed methodically by them. These striking unions are also asking why this government is hell bent on destroying the Maharatna companies, planning to sell them off at cheap prices."

Conclusion:*Reaction on Iran-US war*
With Iran firing several missiles targeting US troops in Iraq bases, the tension in the Gulf is at an escalation point. While responding to a question over this matter, Pawan khera said, "There are many reasons behind the actions taken by US and Iran in the past few days. But we feel bad over the matter as US had consulted with China, Pakistan and many other countries before taking any action, but they didn't felt the need to talk to India. Our country used to be seen as an example on the international platform, but now the situation has changed."
