Clause 6 committee to submit report in next one month

A twelve-member Committee on Clause 6 is going to submit its report about Assam to the Centre in January 2020. As the anti-CAA protest has been raging in Assam, the urgency to implement Clause 6 as soon as possible. Besides this, Union Home Minister Amit Shah assured that Clause 6 will be implemented soon after the committee will submit its report.

New Delhi: Getting shocked over the spontaneous protest and agitation in Assam against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), the 12 member committee on Clause 6 of Assam Accord is likely to submit its report to the central government in next one month.

The government sources have told ETV Bharat that the committee members have been asked by North Block to submit its report at the earliest.

In fact, the anti-CAA agitators especially leaders of All Assam Students Union (AASU) have asked the government to implement Clause 6 of the Assam Accord without any delay.

Clause 6 of the historic Assam Accord talks about providing constitutional, legislative and administrative safeguards as well as protect, preserve and promote the cultural, social, linguistic identity and heritage of the Assamese people.

Home Minister Amit Shah has recently said that government is ready to implement Clause 6, once the committee submits its report.

The Home Ministry in July has reconstituted the 12 member committee headed by Justice (retired) Biplab Kumar Sarma and asked to submit its report at the earliest. In the month of October and November, the committee had back to back meetings with different organisations, student bodies from Assam.

Anticipating that the Citizenship Amendment Act might destroy the culture, identity and political rights of the people of Assam, the anti-CAA agitators were demanding implementation of Clause 6 of Assam Accord.

Talking on the issue, a senior journalist from Assam, Kalyan Barooah said that Clause 6 is one of the crucial Clause of Assam Accord.

"While Clause 5 of the Assam Accord talks about detection and deportation of the illegal foreigners, Clause 6 talks about giving protection the culture, tradition social identity of the indigenous people of Assam," said Barooah.

Meanwhile, the 12 member committee consists of academicians, journalists, retired bureaucrats, student leaders among others.
