CJI recuses from hearing AP govt's plea against '3 capitals'

Chief Justice of India SA Bobde recused himself from hearing the Andhra Pradesh government's plea against the High Court's stay order on the three capitals issue, after it was pointed out that his daughter had represented one of the parties in the High Court.

New Delhi: Chief Justice of India SA Bobde on Monday recused himself from hearing the Andhra Pradesh state government's petition challenging the High Court's interim stay order on the formation of three capitals in the state.

Bobde was informed by one of the advocates that his daughter had appeared for one of the parties in the High Court, following which the CJI said he is recusing himself from the hearing.

The matter was adjourned to August 19, when a new constituted bench will conduct the hearing.

Earlier on Friday, the High Court extended till August 27 the status quo on the two new laws that enable the establishment of three new capitals for the state.

The state government filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking that the status quo order of the High Court be lifted.

The Jagan Mohan Reddy government brought in the AP Decentralisation and Inclusive Development of All Regions Bill, 2020,to give shape to its plan of having three capitals for the state, with the executive capital in Visakhapatnam, Legislative capital in Amaravati and judicial capital in Kurnool.

It also provides for dividing the state into various zones and establishing zonal planning and development boards.
