'Centre tried to make India smart'

Urban expert Dr Barsha Poricha lauded the centre's initiative towards a smart city. Refusing to label the mission as a failure, she said that there are many challenges in a smart city approach.

New Delhi: Urban sector and Smart-city expert on Tuesday refused to label the Centre's Smart City Mission inititative as 'failure'. Referring to Congress' manifesto, Dr Barsha Poricha an urban expert said, "There are many challenges in a smart city, either financial or others...at least the Centre has invested on it. There are problems with the programme, calling it a city-based approach."

In its manifesto, Congress on Tuesday tagged the Smart City Mission as a complete failure and a waste of money with no visible results.

Congress promises to formulate a comprehensive policy on urbanisation after wide consultation.

The manifesto stated the Congress will address wider issues concerning city governance, people's levelihood.

The election manifesto also promises to formulate and implement policy on urban transport with emphasis on metro rail, suburban rail and electric vehicles act.

"It's like any other manifesto. In fact, there is no people centric agenda in the manifesto," claimed urban expert.
