New Delhi: Indian Youth Congress President, Srinivas BV has filed an application of intervention before Karnataka High Court for an urgent hearing of a writ petition pertaining to cancellation of Shramik Special Trains, alleging the State Government on violation of human rights of migrant workers.

In a statement issued by the youth wing of Congress stated, "While the nation has entered the third phase of lockdown, Karnataka Government has shown its extreme insensitivity towards the worsening plight of migrant workers in the state. By canceling Shramik Trains, promised to the migrant workers, BJP led Government in Karnataka has held them hostage in the state against their will."

"Ten special trains were to run from Bengaluru to different northern states this week. But hours after Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa met leading property dealers of the state, the state government wrote a letter to Indian Railways asking it to cancel all trains that were to ferry migrant workers to their home states," the letter read.

While condemning the "inhumane" decision, Srinivas BV alleged that it has been "taken at the behest of Construction lobby" and thus filed an application for the intervention of HC into the matter.

Through this application, IYC President has highlighted the violation of human rights, by this decision of Karnataka Government, protected under Articles 14,19 and 23 of the Constitution of India.

Srinivas has also prayed that the HC to pass an order directing the state government to identify all migrant workers wishing to return home and facilitate there travel from various parts of the state free of cost.

Notably, Srinivas also sought that the state and Central Government ensures all basic amenities including food, drinking water, clean toilets, and sanitizers to be made available at all Railway stations and bus stands from where the migrant workers are expected to leave.
