Quebec City /Hyderabad: A biotechnology company in Quebec City says that it has produced a potential vaccine for COVID-19.
After research and several experiments, Medicago, a noted company in Canada has claimed that their research study conducted on rats has given positive results against the deadly virus.
The study gave good results and we are going ahead, the company informed.
As part of their experiment, they started giving single doses to rats and in about 10 days, their bodies generated the necessary anti-bodies.
The company has applied for permission from the Canada Government and FDA of US to conduct clinical trials on human beings.
After completing all formalities and the clinical trials and seeing the results thereof, we will go ahead, the company stated.
However, they still have to decide on the number of doses for clinical trials on human beings that could begin as early as July.
If they enter phase one clinical trials in July or August, phase two will commence in December and phase three in March next year.
Medicago uses "virus-like particles" that mimic the form of virus, but without the infectious properties which trigger human's immune system to create antibodies to fight the actual virus.
The company's technology uses plants, instead of animal cells or eggs, to mass produce vaccines. This means that scaling up to deliver vaccine doses to millions can be done more quickly than with traditional vaccine manufacturing processes.
In 2009, Medicago had developed the vaccine to fight H1N1 flu in just 19 days of the lab-level experiment.
