New Delhi: Terming the CAA "unconstitutional", former union minister and senior Congress leader Salman Khurshid on Tuesday said the amended citizenship law is one of the characteristics of the BJP-led NDA government.
Khurshid, who had come to meet people protesting against the CAA at Jantar Mantar here, said India is a democratic country and everyone has his or her democratic rights here.
He said the government was under pressure because of the ongoing protest across the nation. The Congress leader also said that people protesting at Shaheen Bagh would be supported and given consultation. He was reacting to the Delhi High Court asking the city police to look into the traffic restrictions on the Kalindi Kunj-Shaheen Bagh stretch that are causing major problems to the commuters.
Speaking to the ETV Bharat here, Congress spokesperson Ragini Nayak asked why did the government issue Gazette notification on CAA.
"Is the government sleeping? Can't they see how people are protesting against the amended citizenship law," she asked and said in a democracy, the government runs on dialogue and the present regime was trying to base it on the dispute.
A woman protester, who has been a part of the demonstration against the CAA, told ETV Bharat that the government should speak to the agitating people and assure them that there would no problem for any Indian Muslim, who have been living here for generations, in case they fail to produce required documents to prove their identity.
"We have no problems if the government decides to bring in people from other countries into India and give them citizenship but how about people, especially Muslims, living here for a long time and not having any paper," she asked, adding that in that case, the government would throw them out.
"People coming from outside would be given citizenship. Do the same thing for Indian Muslims who may not have documents but have lived here for generations," she said.
