Breached embankment causes concern in Malda

At least one lakh people live in Hiranandapur, Keshabpur and Koshighat in Maldra where a breach along river Ganges has caused serious concern among the population.

Malda (West Bengal): Large swathes of land have been lost due to erosion on the banks of river Ganges in West Bengal's Malda district, officials say.

The local authorities are working on a war-footing to plug a breach in the embankment in Bhutni Char area, they said.

A breach along the embankment caused concern among a population of one lakh living in Hiranandapur, Keshabpur and Koshighat.

After inspecting the breach, Congress MLA Mottakin Alam alleged that the Trinamool Congress administration has failed to take action on time.

At least 55 houses were affected by erosion in another area of Malda district in August.
